the classic Santana sound is Mesa Boogie, MK Is. Get one of those and an SG or a PRS, and you can nail the sound.

Spend 3g's on a Fuchs SLX or TDS and laugh at the prices Dumbles are going for :D

Everybody knows Trainwreck Rocket and Express amps are really where it's at ;)

Yup....I stumbled on my little Fuchs ODS Custom 20, had it SLX'd & it's by far the sweetest amp I've ever played.

No pedals required!!!

The OD is AMAZING !!! :32:

Well, technically every Dumble is a custom amp. They're built to the strengths and weaknesses as a player.

Larry Carleton and Santana are really the two I think of when it comes to Dumbles. Carlos' rig has been written about extensively in Guitar Player Magazine.

Is it worth it? I'd say yes--certainly Mr. C and Mr. S have attested to that. Carleton's tone in particular--he has a sweet, sustaining, singing CLEAN tone--with such incredible presence.

Can I afford it? I can't, but a guy like Larry or Carlos--sure. What else are they going to do with their money?

And don't forget, it's a BIG tax write-off! :usa1: :smack: :usa1:

sounds to me like you have entered the bruce-zone at guitar exchange in catonsville ... yup, he's a pr!ck alright ... and yup, the dumbles are not for sale and i bet he wouldnt even let you try it ... i've heard (but can't confirm) tha he'll let you rent it for studio work for an insane amount of money ... i don't shop there anymore - too many other places to find gear from guys who arent unpleasant to be around

Last I heard Carlos owns a couple of them. I think I remember hearing that he picked another one up not too long ago for a pretty ungodly sum of money.

I know John Mayer onws a few of them. SRV was, of course, the guy that made them huge when everyone was trying to get his tone. Of course, SRV got access to his first one from Jackson Browne during the recording of "Texas Flood."

Ya know....for a bill I might be up for a couple hours worth of rental just to see what the fuss is all about.

Steve Kimock is one of the only guys I know who's gigging with a Dumble right now. Carlos has been running Boogies for eons, SRV used 'em for a little bit always with other amps, who else...I dunno. Joe Bonomassa (did I spell that right?) has a Dumble but doesn't use it live. He's running a three-amp rig with Marshalls, a Bhudda and some kinda Dumble knock-off that's STILL like $6K.

I've played through 'em and IMHO they aren't worth it unless it happens to be that last missing link in your tone. Someone said it's like the Barden thing, $800 for a set of pickups and yah...it's VERY much like that. The guys who get magical sounds out of them all play with a really light touch and they sound HUGE through 'em.

Super responsive. It's like a sports car suspension, like a REAL sports car...Ferrari or something. Turns on a dime.

When I played an Overdrive 120 it just got smaller & smaller the more I muscled the guitar. It was pretty much the opposiate of what I'd look for in an amp and for me it wasn't magical or anything. Really sweet, but it just didn't light me up. Given the price, well...you could put together a really huge collection of amps and want for nothing.

There's my two cents.

They are supposed to be the schnizl, and have incredible tone, but to me....$10k + is just way too much. You can get 95% of the tone for half the money or less.

Actually Eric Johnson uses Plexis and Deluxe Reverbs pretty exclusive. I've seen him live a few times and that is his setup.

The Guys that I know for sure are using them is Robben Ford (He uses 2 100W heads). And Carlos Santana is now using them.


The Other amp that will appraoch the Dumble price is a Tainwreck. They were made by a guy named Ken Fisher and as far as I know he no longer makes them. He stopped making them due to health reasons, but my understanding is that Komets are based on his design. Supposedly the guy who makes Komets is a close personal friend of Fisher.

I have played thru one Dumble it it was a very impressive amp no question.... but I can't see paying 15G's for an Amp no matter how good it is.

I have never played thru a trainwreck but I have been told that it is one of the best sounding amps ever. No channel switching..... no master volume just pure tube saturation and absolute tone heaven!!

Too much money for just an amp. IMO there are fine substitutes out on the market. And if i breaks down, you're straight up done.


It's all about supply and demand and mythology with this it seems. I think there are custom amp builders out there who will make you an amp that is just as killer for so much less. Check out our own home boy Scott F.

Also, notice how guys mostly use Dumbles WITH other amps in a rig. To think that ANYONE, celebrity, famous, whatever, spends that much money on an amp and uses it with 3 or 4 other amps is ridiculous. With Fuchs out, you'd think Dumbles would become obsolete. Not to mention the prick-ness of Alexander Dumble. The whole thing doesn't make much sense to me, although I do quite like the Dumble tone.

yeah thats the place. the guy came out and pretended to be working on other stuff as we paroused. besided bills, jims guitars down the street is the place for me. ever since they have aquired the barber shop, it seems like they have tripled the amount of stuff they have.

robben ford used to use dumbles and they say that his sound would get lost in the mix all the time, especially when he played with other guitarrists. He recently switched to a super reverb and that isnt a problem anymore.

There's amps that deliver a 'honey tone', but it comes at a price-cash wise and cut wise. I'd rather spend alot less on something like a deluxe reverb that sounds sweet cranked and cuts into a mix with no sweat than a honey tone that only sounds right if you're jamming out by yourself.

but if any of the "poor man's" DUmble's are an indication - I am soooo not impressed for that kinda tone in that price range. Second, I like an amp I can take out and not panic my ass off.

I have played instruments of god and amps of god from 57 strats to MEsa MArk 2cs and 67 Marshalls, and even those aren't that price-y. They sounded amazing, but they were nothing I couldn't get out of any other rig. Frankly, if you are recording, I would rather have an amazing Universal, Fairchild, or Neve etc etc etc or U87 - that's TONE. Live, who knows? As long as I vibe with an instrument - who cares. For all my expensive **** - I LOVE my korean ibanez 335 rip off and my MIJ strat - soooo puh leeeez. After about 4 grand, the tone really is in your hands.

Frankly, I think you can trick out and mod a lot of new reissue amps to sounds pretty damn good. And if you lose them, go buy another. Before I get to rambling, I am just saying even if I make $10 mil. tomorrow I am not auditioning for someone at $20-40 grand so he can choose my tone. I won't do it just out of protest. How un-rock n roll. Ot was this garbage excess that killed rock to begin with - this is right up there with having a coke habit as far as I am concerned.

Santana and Johnson made them sound amazing. Frankly, we ALL know for a fact they can SMOKE without them. IN FACT, I was in a shop on Sunset and Carlos was there - he hooked into a Fender Hot Rod Deville, clean, with a Strat and proceeded to BLOW MINDS. So apaprently, he can kill on a budget.

I got my 73 LP for $150 bucks and my 73 Marshall for $800, slipped in some Duncans, and they sound AMAZING!

I used to play a Seymour Duncan Convertible thru an Altec 417 - total price = $150 and it sounded AMAZING. If it were more reliable I would take it over a many known manufacturers. hahah now it sits on my shelf.

Oh well, no Dumble for me - my loss. Funny, the first 4 letters are Dumb (yeah, I thought of that one myself, really I did).
