dumble

Re: dumble

Olin puts it best... that's unbelievable amounts of cash to have someone pick the sound you get.

WHOA WTF! I've never heard t4d say anything bad about anyone, that dude must be the male equivilent of Leona Helmsley.

Re: dumble

Last time I saw Robben Ford he was playing through two Dumble heads through what appeared to be Fender Custom shop tweed cabs. I was right close. It was probably the best clean I've ever heard. Was it tens of thousands of dollors worth of spectacular cleans? Probably not. BTW, he was playing a vintage tele exclusively.

I am just saying even if I make $10 mil. tomorrow I am not auditioning for someone at $20-40 grand so he can choose my tone. I won't do it just out of protest.

That's the humorous thing!! These things don't cost that much new. They cost that much used.....new they're under the $5k range if I remember correctly. The difficult part is getting him to make one for you!!! That's why the prices are so high...only people he approves can even buy them...so if you're chops aren't up to snuff or you don't have the time to audition for him or you just don't want to deal with him, you have to pay the resale price for these things.

sounds like the (ONLY) music store here in central oregon, 'brians house of music' we call it 'brians house of watch-you'
a dude (who is pretty mellow but always in the back working) and his psycho wife run the store. "let me know if you have any questions" in the most abrasive and hate filled vocal tones comes from her mouth every minute, on the minute, as soon as you set foot in the store. im lucky because she doesnt hassle me too much any more but some of my friends and some of the random dudes that walk in get it +10.

thank god for musicians friend and same day, but i HAVE TO go there sometimes... ya know

Re: dumble

Barbara K (Timbuk3) has an Overdrive Special (or had, at any rate, haven't talked to her in awhile). I never cared for the "drive" channel at all, but the clean channel is just incredibly beautiful. Overpriced? Yeah, no question. . . but, if she still owns it, it's worth about 5 or 6 times what she paid for it all those years ago. I wish all my gear appreciated thataway. . . .

robben ford used to use dumbles and they say that his sound would get lost in the mix all the time, especially when he played with other guitarrists. He recently switched to a super reverb and that isnt a problem anymore.

.

I don't know about that. I've always heard him with the Dumble and he sounds spectacular. He uses the S Reverb when he's playing for someone else (since he doesn't have his guitar tech) and when he doesn't want to risk losing/damaging his Dumble.

Re: dumble

These are kind of like the Holy Grail of amps. My Fuchs TDS 50 is a Dumble inspired design. They were intially not that expensive when they were first built starting in the Late 60's. But, they have become collectors items. SRV recorded at least two of his albums with one. Two Rock Amplifiers actually have amps with the same name, and Carlos Santana still uses one in his rig bulit for him more than 30 years ago. They're cascading smooth overdrive and shimmering cleans is what made them famous.

Re: dumble

Alot of you guys just don't get it....

It isn't about how good it sounds. Considering they're all custom-made to a specific players strengths and weaknesses the odds are to begin with that if you're buying used you're hoping your playing qualities will be the same as the person it was built for.

It's about the legend behind it. Hate the guy for what he is and what he does but he's created a mystique about the amps. The names that play them aren't even that huge; it isn't like EVERY great player is playing them; a handfull of very notable players use them...that's all!
