Thanks, that is definitely my go-to guitar for recording. I don't think the Custom uoa5 would work in every guitar, but my LP custom copy (Agile 3100) has the really bright immediate attack that you get from an ebony board. I counteract that with the warm, dynamic cuoa5 and the results have been great. Although, I have to say, I could play just about anything through the mxr zw and my xxx and it would sound very tight.
Well, those clips and the fact that you say your Agile is brightish has disrupted my thoughts of getting another JB for my LP. Mine also has an ebony board, and it definitely has that "snap" and attack you are talking about. I tried the SH5 Custom a while back, but it was REALLY bright in this guitar, but for the most part, was really nice. I just couldn't dial out that top end grind. Could be from the ceramic magnet? I swapped in an A5 from a JB, but I thought the C5 was just okay. Now, I'm thinking the C8 or COUA5 might be the ticket. I'll have to give the Customs another shot.
I also think like Blue, that the pots will make a big difference. Now that I think of it, I put that SH5 in some old Epi LP along with the old pots from my Gibson. In the Bridge of that Epi, it would POUND, not cut, through a band mix. I have since sold that Epiphone, but I took all the electroincs out and installed some EMGs for my buddy who bought it. I have since found the pots from that setup and it was actually a pair of 100k pots. Talk about treble rolloff! Maybe thats what I need with this guitar. Lower value pots.
