Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

I'm actually going to wait for more info/demos for the Thrash Factor and the Kirk Hammett Bone Breaker set. You would think both Duncan and EMG would be trying harder to sell these sets, but both of them just have really brief videos with DM and KH talking over most of it.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

Well, they just were announced at NAMM, so videos and soundclips are being introduced as they are completed. Sets are being sent out for review as well, so you should start seeing reviews on other sites, too.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

Does anyone know the dimensions for a ceramic magnet for the SH-5? I found a couple but I want to make sure they're the right size.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

I just got an email from SD and they said that there is more to it than just changing the magnet. "There is more too [sic] it with a different wind pattern and such." Looks like the hunt is on for a new bridge pickup. It's gotta have brutal but clear palm mutes. Notes must be clear and articulate, a la EMG 81. But I'm trying to avoid getting the 81 because I already have the 57/66 set in my other guitar and I feel it won't sound much different. At Guitar Center the other day, they had guitars with the 81, Blackouts, Distortion, and JB so I was able to compare them to each other (a very unique opportunity that hardly appears at my local GC). There were things that I liked about all of them, but quite a few things that I didn't like also. Hunt is on...

Care to share the actual e-mail? Because that's simply not true.

I'm sure most of you already know this, but that email is not correct. We have some relatively new guys working in customer service now who are quite knowledgable, generally speaking, but there is a lot of history and information regarding the peculiarities of our pickups that can't all be learned over night. I'll chat with David about the Custom line so he can give accurate information in the future - hopefully we can all cut him some slack, I assure you he means well!

Thanks! Good to know.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

I haven’t posted in a while but I did a few mag swap comparison reviews on the custom and on some hybrids that I made. I play metal too and I love the custom. But what I love better is to take that regular size mag out of the custom and swap it with the double thick ceramic mag from the Duncan distortion. You can buy just the mag too. In comparison with the stock sh5, the thick ceramic adds meat and warmth but still big sounding and very clear and very defined string separation. You can actually feel power chords with the pickup. It hits you in the chest. It’s my favorite especially in a les Paul. If for whatever reason you want more metal than that, go with the stock Duncan distortion. It’s more shredding and cuts more. If
