Duncan Distortion in an Ash Body and Ebony Fretboard?

Hi everyone, I'd just like to get some opinions on this build:

Ash body, Maple Neck with Ebony Fretboard and a set of SH-6 Distortion pickups.

Would this be overly bright or brittle sounding?

Thanks!

Don't know 'bout brittle, but definitely bright! Is the Ash body swamp ash or northern hard ash?

You might look into the Alternative 8 bridge with the Distortion neck. That would shave off the bright top end you're worried about from the Distortion bridge. The Distortion neck is a fine choice, not too bright for that guitar.

I'd try Invaders first. Noticeably warmer from the additional magnets.

Hhhmm...I think I WILL try the Alternative 8.

It's a swamp ash body.

Do you think having a 250k tone pot with a .22 cap would help also? As opposed to having a 500k tone pot with a .22 cap?

Thanks for the suggestions! Hope I hear more. I'm definitely looking forward to exploring several avenues. :-)

A pot or cap can be easily changed. Build the guitar with the main items then season to taste.

Im not really sure why people think the sh6 is overly bright "or" brittle?

I find it thick and juicey, not fizzly and shrill. Its alot tighter and a hell of alot less fizzier than the invader.

The sh6 N is my fav neck pup of all time.... overlooked IMO.

The Alt8 could be a good choice also, but if you want a grinding guitar start with the 6's and muck around with pot and cap values.

Re: Duncan Distortion in an Ash Body and Ebony Fretboard?

If you're using the SH-15 I would start with 500k pots all around and .022 capacitor. That way you're running the neck pickup "wide open" and the SH-15 doesn't really need "taming" on the top end from 250k pots. The sweetness on the very high top end is built in to the pickup.

Hi,

I have a 80's Kramer Baretta with Maple body and neck and Rosewood fingerboard.

I replace the original JB for one Duncam Distortion and its sounds really better.

The distortion has more low tones than JB and its really more agressive. Its harmonics are amazing.

The clean sound still really good, the combination of a distortion and maple gave me a high output and bright sound. It sounds really god for clean and distorted sounds.

I like duncan distortion so much its sounds really great, many of 80's guitarist like George Lynch, Joey Tafolla and others used it.

Ok I just spoke to my luthier. He just got a shipment of Rosewood.

Should I go rosewood or do I stick with ebony?

Do I go ebony? Or is rosewood surely a safer bet?

Rosewood would be more of a 'classic' combination with maple and ash than ebony, but it really comes down to personal taste - do you want the guitar to be brighter or warmer? Brighter, pick ebony, warmer, pick rosewood.

Ebony + Ash + Alt8 sounds like an awesome combo. I would give that a try.
