Duncan Distortion neck vs Black Winter neck

I'm trying to decide which of these to get for my Gibson SG. What are the differences and pros and cons of both? I listened to the sound samples, but it's not my guitar or amp, so it's difficult to make a judgement.

Re: Duncan Distortion neck vs Black Winter neck

based on what i heard on youtube clips, Black Winters possible the warmest, rich, lush sounding high output bucker I've heard, its like they have an analog chorus build into the circuit. With that being sound they just in different realm vs DD. They just in different realms ...

Re: Duncan Distortion neck vs Black Winter neck

they look very similar on paper, but....

Distortion neck is a little bigger and a little more saturated sounding.

BW neck has a lot of the same precision focus as the BW bridge.

IME I wouldn't call my Black Winters warm by any stretch. They are very flat and sterile all around. No character. I had to make significant adjustments to amp/EQ to get something out of them. But then I probably didn't use them at the gain levels they were intended. I bought them because everyone said they cleaned up so well by rolling the volume back - which is what I was looking for. They were a bit too clean for me.

From what I have READ - and I read a lot....

They are VERY similar pickups. The Black Winter seems a bit more articulate under mega-doom-black-death metal uber amp overdrives. The Distortion is a little more intended to for classic drive amps. It's harder, louder, sharper and more sizzly.

Did I get that?

Good description of the Distortion, as it was in my Les Paul.

Unfortunately, I can't speak to the BW under mega-doom-black-death metal uber amp overdrive. Since I'm not using them, I was just about to experiment with magnet swaps to see what else I could get out of them.

Re: Duncan Distortion neck vs Black Winter neck

Under medium distortion the black winter has some issues to me. It's not a bad pickup by any means but it is so articulate it can fall into the "sterile" category depending on what amp you use. When I use my hot rod deville it sounds big and dark and hollow and spooky even. But in my line six at home it sounds flat and dull. So take that however you want to interpret it. My guitar is also a set neck mahogany PRS SE so that may give you some relevance. I don't play metal, I play hard rock and desert rock/doom at the heaviest.

Personally, I like the Black Winter's clean sound, too...which I don't like on the Distortion.

Re: Duncan Distortion neck vs Black Winter neck

Have any of you guys tried the Black Winter neck in the bridge position? I'm wondering how it would do there.
