Duncan Distortion or Custom

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom

Mincer I was worried about the distortion being too bright because I mostly play in standard or eflat.I kinda like the mid scooped specs on the Duncan description.

This was my thought too, unless you have a really dark guitar. Sabbath and Big 4 tones aren't really bright. They are BIG.

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom

I guess it also depends on how you EQ your amp. I have not used a Custom but I had a JB for years in old Strat with a rosewood fretboard then I felt a wanted a bit more crunch or bite (not an english speaker but I think those are the words) so I got a Charvel with a Distortion set that I was originally thinking to use it as a great platform guitar and put the JB instead to take advantage of the maple fretboard in theory making it a brighter guitar then I found I really got what I wanted from those distortion bridge. It took me a while but after further tweaking the eq I got to a tone I like too from the distortion neck.

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom

Yeah it's a Lp pretty much lol. From what videos I've found I like the custom but a lot like the distortion as well. /:

I have an LTD ec1000. I'd say it is somewhat similar to a Les Paul(obviously in shape). IMO it feels and sounds like a mix of a les paul & an SG. I'm really liking the Custom 5 / Jazz in my ec1000. considering trying the Custom 8 / Jazz 4

Ok sorry it took so long lol.Ive been jamming it a lot and I really like it.Nice and thrashy. It was nice to see also my Exlipse has all dimarzio electronics.Mine being an 06 came with factory emgs not Duncan's like the 05 vintage honey burst one. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom

Haha I'm happy with the custom. If I get another before long I'll probably put a distortion in it.

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom

I haven't tried the Custom (Custom 5 is closest), but in my experience the Distortion can be a bit shrill in the highs and fuzzy (think 5150 type preamp distortion). I like death metal and 80s thrash and often the Distortion is a bit much for me as far as tracking rhythms.

However, I absolutely love it for tracking solos. It cuts through very well.

So if you do go with the Distortion be mindful of the treble and saturation that pickup produces.

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom

I find that the Custom tend to be really boomy in a LP style guitar. The Distortion is much friendlier and easier to dial in than the Custom in my experience.

Hmm, I have a Custom in my Les Paul and it doesn't sound boomy to me at all. Plus it puts out a nice midrange grind in that guitar, and the top end is crisp.
