which would be better for classic rock to metal(not Nu-Metal) in a poplar or alder body, Duncan Dist. or the JB?

which would be more versitle?

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB?

To tell you the truth, those are all great choices for that style...

If you want versatility, they don't get much more versatile than a JB. However, I love the Custom for classic rock tones (it's that PAF 'tude babee!)

The Distortion, if your amp has lots of headroom, can also be rather versatile and clean up well.

The Demon is a great choice for shreddy material, and it cleans up nicely and has great clarity.

All great choices.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB?

I have a custom in my very first guitar and have had friends play it in old school metal bands and it is a great pick up. I just put a dimebucker in my epi les paul, and I'm loving that so far. Its another option, and probably not a bad one. I've never played a distortion, but I did call Seymor Duncan, and they highly recommended it for my style of play as well. (lots of heavier rock/metal type stuff)

I had the JB in my bridge, and I didn't like it. For heavy rythym it was just too....mushy for me. I wanted a tighter, punchier, crunchier type of sound, and the dimebucker filled that roll quite well. I did put the JB in the neck and I'm loving it in that position though.

The Demon has worked well for me and I used to play a Distortion that covered alot of turf too. No experience with a JB or Custom. Yet....

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB?

I have all 4, thats not a fair question. Your asking me to choose between 4 of my many children, I cant pick one over another.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB?

Didn't quite fully read the question yet so I voted Distortion. Poplar and Alder are fairly bright woods, I rarely hear people comment the JB and Distortion in those woods, though I have to admit I'm loving the leads from the Jb in an Alder bodied axe. I don't think you'll get all that good rhythm work out of it, and you'll be taming the brightness most of the time. So to keep a long story short I'd say the Custom is your best deal here. Very balanced, won't brighten up too much, keeps a little bit of the PAF vibe stored which'll give you that old school taste, enough output to do the heavy stuff...What could you possibly want more? :)

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB?

I say Custom. but since the screamin demon is more of a PAF type pickup maybe that would be more of what you're looking for.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB?

I never try to tame the highs on my JB. I like a bright sounding guitar more than a mushy sounding guitar. Without highs the guitar can somewhat sound dull and plain, FROM MY EXPERIENCE.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB?

I tried ever model you listed and the CUSTOM(ceramic) won hands down, the JB is not as classic toned due to its upper mid peak, the distortion is just to HOT and nasty, the demon is to progressive sounding in the bridge, BUT the CUSTOM has a PAF type tone along with the power need for the heavier stuff :headbang:
it is my favorite higher output model.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB?

why not go between the two with the C-5? Well, maybe it isn't between but still a killer pickup. For my guitar, the C-5 is great at the moment......but for you I would go the Custom route as some have suggested. Keep in mind I have not played the Custom but have played the others.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB?

It really depends on your amp. I would go with either Duncan Distortion or Jb. Need the extra mid range for leads. Either case I would only choose if my gutiar had a rosewood fret board, if maple I would suggest Custom 5.
