Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

How would a Duncan Distortion compare w/ a Duncan Custom, in Les Paul guitar?
I play stuffs by Pantera, Zakk Wylde, Metallica, Megadeth..like that..

Re: Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

I've tried both and prefer the Distortion which I find has some good C H U G. I think it would be perfect for the stuff you want to play. The Custom is also a great pup, but I find it brighter and has less mids than a Distortion.

Cheers Primo.

Re: Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

Hey, a homegrown Winnipegger. Never though I'd run into another one of myself here.

Anyways, on-topic. It all boils down to what kind of wood your guitar is made out of. Don't quote me on this, but I think the C-5 is better suited for bright guitars, and the DD is better suited for warm guitars. I may be wrong, but if my memory serves me correct, that's what I led to believe.

Re: Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

The Distortion is a lot hotter than the Custom, as well. For all the bands you listed, I'd suggest the Distortion.

Re: Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

Actually I already have the Custom, and Im thinking of replacing them with DD.

yes the DD is a ass kicker for sure!
i found it to be the best metal pup i have tried.
for me it beat out the emg 81 and the lawrence 500xl for a pure aggressive metal tone while still sounding real and not artificial
:32:
sounds like GOD through a mesa MK IV on 6! :saeek:

Re: Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

I prefer the Custom in the bridge. To my ears, it has more weight to the chunk for punk and metal riffing. In the neck, though, I love the Distortion. In fact, in that position, I think the DD is a little bit misnamed, as a) it cleans up quite well b) it can handle smooth, creamy distortion as easily as over-the-top stuff and c) well, I don't really have a C)...

But yeah, I like the DD-DC combo.

I agree about the name "distortion" being misleading as all hell.
it is not a metal zone in a pup tone at all,it is RAW,DISTINCT,EDGY,TIGHT,HOT but not in the sense of like when you click on a pedal.
the actual tone of this pup it quite pleasing.

the custom is another that would be perfect for me if it had a bit more output?
if it had the output of the DD i would use one for sure cause man it has TONE!

Re: Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

Yeah, I love the edginess you mention. It gives neck-pup leads a cool grittiness (though the HB-103 -- the Duncan Designed Distortion -- has a nice, even more ragged edge to it...)

Re: Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

Yeah, they're the buckshot (I could have sworn that thye had a different name when they were introduced, though....maybe I'm wrong). The general consensus is that since they're the cheaper version of the DD, they're worse. I say they're just different. Not a TON different, which is why I was willing to order a DD for my new axe simply to get it in black/white reverse zebra, but different enough to hear it.

Re: Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

I just ordered a Custom over a Distortion, hopefully the Custom kicks as much ass as everyone said in one of my threads.

they are different beast but are equally great.
the DD is more aggressive with a more pronounced ROAR and a certain edginess that is addicting(damn i have to plug in now just thinkin bout it :laugh2: )
the custom has a l hotter than normal P.A.F vibe going on.
it has a deep tight bass, punchy mids and a real nice crisp treble
very balanced and still can be aggressive

to sum this up and show you a comparison this is the DD

and this would be the custom,

equally dangerous and mean!

LOL...I love it! :laugh2:

Did you know that tigers can jump up to 20 feet straight-up in the air?

I'd like to see a Custom do that! hehe

BTW, I agree that the Custom & DD are equals, just different, so that Tiger picture should actually be the same size! ;)

I think it's the other way around. :)

Re: Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

I had a DD in my Studio Paul for a while but it got old. It has no life just metal. I opted for a Lundgren but in my new guitar Im having built Im gonna use a JB I think. Its a good pickup for metal though, especially lower tuned stuff.

Re: Duncan Distortion vs. Duncan Custom???

I'm just about to get a DD so I hope it's as good as people say, but judging from the soundclips it seemed like the best one for heavy metal distortion.

Btw, welcome to the forum metalguy!
