Duncan Distortion

Re: Duncan Distortion

Just to be clear, the Distortion pickup does not have "distortion" built-in. It just does grunge real well. It can be as clean as you desire. Check out this clip I made several years ago using the Distortion neck.

I know, it just sounds that way to me.

Re: Duncan Distortion

sorry to sabotage this thread (just thought whilst everyone is talking about the distortion that i'd add this quick question to go along with it), but i'm considering trying out a distortion too in my RG570(using 12-56 nickel wound strings tuned to D standard) because i am having issues with the bass in my tonezone being really loose and flabby, so when i riff on my low E it sounds really... greasy and horrible really. How tight is the distortions bass really compared to the tonezones? and will it be a good match for my guitar for metal?

Jesus H., CGord, that clip is great!!
What are you using for drums?

Thanks! The drum pattern was purchased from the Sonoma Wire Works site (I use the Line 6 RiffTracker recording setup).

The clip I posted is my bridge Distortion in my Dean Z-X (Explorer style, basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard) & is in drop-C tuning.

So you don't have to go back to page 1: :)

Re: Duncan Distortion

Well, my green Distortion is on its way. Should have in a few days. Then, we will see if it is a good match for the old Focus 1000. My son is cringing that I bought a green pickup.. He's getting sick of hearing , "well, in the 80s...."

Forget the 80s.... Green pickups are the stuff anytime :D Don't worry, someday your son will catch on.

Re: Duncan Distortion

You know, I was TOTALLY against the DD just because I assumed it would be shrill. I don'tknow, maybe I just associated Distortion with Grim Reaper or something. Couldn't have been more wrong. Got one that came in an 84 Jackson Rhodes, LOVE it. Not a super bassy pickup, but not in the LEAST bit shrill. Lots of treble, sure, but it isnt at all harsh, and as others have said, really tight bass response. Does the Jerry Cantrell thing REALLY well.

Re: Duncan Distortion

Wild harmonics? Man that gives me flashbacks of when I got my explorer and had the 500T in it!!
What a screamer!

The DD will do everything the 500T does, only better. If you liked the 500 you will love the DD. It's thicker and it will give you a nice creamy breakup at high gain.

Re: Duncan Distortion

If the JB in my kramer get's shrill at high volumes and medium gain, would a distortion be a little better rounded in the highs?

The JB rounds out at high gain, but I usually play with less gain and use my playing style to get the high-gain tone.

I loved the 500t in the explorer but it was alittle too sensitive.

Sounds like this Distortion will be an absolute BLAST for me!!! I CANT WAIT!! plus, Im so stoked about the green! Will look cool in my axe.

Re: Duncan Distortion

I got two DD's in my seven-string, meaty, clear, definetely not shrill, no excess bass. It makes a growling well-defined sound at any level.Gotta have'em.

Re: Duncan Distortion

The DD is one of my favorite Duncan pups. It is very full sounding with excellent string to string definition.

Re: Duncan Distortion

it is a great pickup as long as you like metal, there are other pickups in seymours lineup for rock etc. that might be better if you don't play metal, like the custom. I love it in my guitar for sure though!

Re: Duncan Distortion

Here's a clip comparing directly the JB and the DD in the bridge position. JB is on the right, DD on the left. BTW, the JB is running thru 250K pots. I think the DD is a little brighter than the JB (but far from shrill) with a bit more output. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=520434&songID=4019501

Overall, I like the DD. My only issue with it is a slight fizz/grind up top (I like a clearer tone for leads). The DD seems better suited to rhythms and the JB for leads.

Hi Mixolydian! What's the capacitor value you used on JB with
250K pots?

Thanks!:chairfall

Re: Duncan Distortion

Im loving this thing!! Ive always been big on scooping the mids. with this distortion, Im cranking the mids! Sounds awesome!! Interestingly, instead of just getting all mid, I get a nice chunk too. Its like its whole voice, low mid and high are in the mid band. Which is cool cuz that will help me cuz through.
