duncan full shred owners

does it make a big diffrence in the sound if the pickup is not trembucker spaced? I installed mine in my dinky and IMHO,I'm not getting that "fat and chunky" sound that it says,I have a JB in my strat and I really love how that one sounds, the pickup it originally had in it was a duncan/designed (distortion) and it really wasn't a bad sounding pup,I just wanted to experiment (like all you guys do with your gear) should I swap magnets out and see what I come up with? But that right there is another issue on how to go about swapping magnets...hehe:smokin:

Re: duncan full shred owners

It matters only of the guitar is trem-spaced, but even then, on bridge pickups, it's not as crucial for the strings to line up dead-on with the polepieces as on the neck pickup, because the bridge pu is focused more on treble than bass. But even if you do have a problem, it will be almost entirely on the E-strings -- ADGB should line up well enough to give you the chunk and punch you need on those strings.

I'm not personally familiar with the Full Shred but if I understand correctly, it's a little top-heavy. You might want a pickup that's more bottom heavy like the Custom, or maybe even the Invader if you want super-chunk and rumble and your guitar is naturally on the bright/thin side.

Re: duncan full shred owners

The Full Shred is indeed voiced towards the high-end but it's not ice-picky.
It's actually a very chunky pup in the bridge, especially in the bridge.
In the neck position, it's the most gratifying dynamic pup I've ever tried.
It's my favorite neck pup, bar none. It's not my favorite for the bridge, I prefer the Distortion model better in combination with the FS in the neck.

Zhangliqun is right about the low E though. It's more of an issue in the neck than the bridge.

p.s. Zhangliqun, I didn't mean to insult you personally in the other thread so for that, I'm sorry. :smack: As an Atheist, I really appreciate your quotes on the bottom of all your posts. :laugh2: :usa1:

Re: duncan full shred owners

As far as trem spaced vs. regular spaced, with high output pickups it's more a matter of aesthetics than anything. I've used a regular spaced Distortion on a Floyd equipped guitar for years and have never noticed any drop-off on the high and low E strings.

As far as the tone of the Full Shred, I found it to be like a hotter Jazz. It's incredibly articulate and clear under high gain, with great harmonics. But it was a little bright for my tastes. It might have something to do with the guitar I had it in, but I would say that for a Dinky (alder body, maple neck) it might not have enough low end. I would think that the Full Shred would work great with a thick mahogany bodied guitar with a set mahogany neck, no maple top.

For a Dinky, depending on what sound you're looking for, it's hard to beat a Distortion or Custom for rock/metal. For anything more bluesy, I would go with a 59.

Re: duncan full shred owners

As Travis was thinking, I've played a Les Paul with a Full Shred bridge, it was absolutely bone-crushing. I got great ultra-high-gain tones from it.

How about full shred bridge in a D/Full step down tuned guitar?

Should work like butta with lower tunings!

Re: duncan full shred owners

Yeah, the Full Shred should stay nice and tight when down tuning. In fact, it might be my first choice for a pickup if I ever tuned to C.

Re: duncan full shred owners

It's a GREAT pickup, which I don't think can sound bad in anything. It's not overlybright, but bright enough to cut and never get muddy with low tunings. If you think it's a bit thin, detune, and you'll see it get thicker. Increase the gain for a similar effect. It's a GREAT pickup that I'd love to see with slightly more output myself, maybe as a CS model one day...

Sh15 PierreShred model..? :D
