what pickups do you have in your guitar?
the stock / duncan designed?
dimarzio designed
power sounds
INF's
V-series

each of these wire differently and the hum you hear may be the coils not selected correctly

if the Humbuckers hum then the middle position could well be "no complete coil selected"
