Duncan Lil Pearly Gates from the Custom Shop..

Anyone used one or heard one?
I am thinking about getting one for my new American Standard Strat..
I love the neck and middle but being a Les Paul guy the bridge has no balls..

Re: Duncan Lil Pearly Gates from the Custom Shop..

I used one in my tele for a while. The tone was phenomenal. It sounded like Billy Gibbons had possessed my tele and amp....in a good way! I only have 1 tele and I keep a more traditional tone from it or I'd have kept it installed.

Nice! How'd the pickup handle hard rock sounds?

Re: Duncan Lil Pearly Gates from the Custom Shop..

Hello there Forum members,

I just bought a bridge version, but I have to wait to install it because I am having the guitar its going in customized.

I am actually creating a 'test pick guard' with all toggles instead of a 5 way to try more options, and screw the pickups to a terminal block until I decide on the final configuration.
I plan on using it to test a lil pearly gates in the bridge, Q-tuner old vs new 2.0 SC/GS model in the middle, and I just got a new StraBro 90 for the neck and see how it performs tapped and untapped.
It will also use a bass roll off and tone controls more like a Reverend than Strat but only because I love those tone controls on the Reverend, they just make sense, and its hard to go back once you've used one.

I was thinking that the other pickups are high output comparatively to the lil PG in the bridge, but it sounds very well defined clean on the you tube videos, which could be switched to for quieter solo riff and just to humbuck the StraBro90 without polluting the sound much.

The guitar customization project has had quite a few delays sadly, so it will be sometime before I can post anything else. I am testing these pickups for a Custom Strat project I am hoping to build next year, and my test guitar that is being customized right now, an 81 Fender Bullet Deluxe Body, which has had a route for a middle pickup and Jack plate along with some body contours done.

Here is a pic of it masked off getting ready for paint in case you were interested.

I am starting to think It might not be finished until Early 2018, I have a Reverend but its populated with full sized Humbuckers, Its sad I have to sit on this because I am dying to hear the lil Pearly Gates in person too.
I might have more to post in 3-4 months.

I was looking to hear from people with experience with these pickups too

Take Care,
-D

My main Caddy has a PG set in it. Rocks as hard as the amp...

Re: Duncan Lil Pearly Gates from the Custom Shop..

I love the pearlys but never owned a lil version. Jolly and I played a Jackson years ago at namm that had one and it was sweet but nothing is the same as actually putting one in your own guitar through your own rig to get to know a pup

This is the best video I have seen showing the pickups in a Strat with plenty of configurations.

Do you hear that brittle ringing when the bridge is in parallel? Completely uacceptable to me.

I like the bridge in series and the neck in parallel, in fact I'm quite impressed. Neck in series is OK. The rest isn't worth all the gymnastics. Classic case of sacrificing a perfectly good instrument in an attempt to be versatile.

Sorry to thread-crap but I think that setup is deserving of some brutal honesty. Believe it or not, my intentions are good. I've struggled with the versatility thing on far too many occasions, only to end up disappointed.

Re: Duncan Lil Pearly Gates from the Custom Shop..

I agree with that to some extent. Trying to squeeze every little tone out of a guitar usually is a waste of time. Get the guitar to get a few great sounds that cover what ya need and be happy. If you need a different set of sounds, get another guitar.

Re: Duncan Lil Pearly Gates from the Custom Shop..

I'll crap along with the other two.

Want a trebley, bitey sound? Use the bridge pickup. Want more bass? Use the neck. Want a less extreme version of either of those? Use position 2, 3, or 4 on a Strat. Beyond that, things are getting silly.

Re: Duncan Lil Pearly Gates from the Custom Shop..

I need to listen to more examples of the neck model in series to give it a fair shot. The bridge model sounded great.
