Duncan Pickup Recommendations for Lukather tone

Hi Everyone,

I've got a Godin Icon guitar (their version of an LP Custom, 24.5-inch scale, with mahogany body & neck and ebony fretboard).

I've got a Whole Lotta Humbucker in the bridge. On this particular guitar, the highs are quite bright. Also, I'd like to get harmonics more easily.

I'd like a Duncan bridge pickup that can (easily) get me a Steve Lukather tone. I'm wondering about a CC or 59/Custom Hybrid, perhaps with an A2 magnet swap.

On the other hand, perhaps tweaking amp and EQ would be the way to go! But I feel like I have a hard time getting the harmonics I want out of this pickup.

Recs? Ideas?

Thanks,

Joe

Luke has signature pickups in the Dimarzio lineup. Maybe that’s not an option for you idk, but it’s worth looking at them.

Re: Duncan Pickup Recommendations for Lukather tone

One of the components of his sound is a preamp booster built into his guitar. He really hits the amp pretty hard. Back in the day, he was also known for active pickups and a whole giant rack of processors, too.

Re: Duncan Pickup Recommendations for Lukather tone

Have you tried an A4 in the WLH bridge or even an A8? Those might solve the issue for cheap.

Steve's sig guitar has a preamp built-in thats always on I think. You could try a boost pedal for getting more harmonics

I know about the Transitions, and I've tried them in the Luke III model and do not like them. I'd like to stick with Duncans.

Re: Duncan Pickup Recommendations for Lukather tone

And he's moving away from the Transitions in his latest model from EBMM, going to an HSS setup with pickups made in house, I believe.

Dimarzio is or used to make music man in house pickups, they dont offer those through a custom order either. Has ebmm started selling their pickups separately? I havent checked their site in a long tine.

I'm gonna throw out a CC with a treble booster pedal of some sort...

Re: Duncan Pickup Recommendations for Lukather tone

Yeah I think the CC might work a bit more in favor of what you're trying to get, and definitely need to have the preamp boost there because that's such a major part of his tone. I know he had that signature preamp booster come out several years back from ToneConcepts.
