duncan surfers vs fender custom69

Re: duncan surfers vs fender custom69

I look at it this way; I really love the tone of Fender American Std. pickups or preferably '69 custom shops. I'm sure the Texas Special is pretty much the same.
Would I put a Fender pickup in my *best Strat? No, because I think Duncans SSL-1's are more historically accurate to a vintage fender tone. The Fender pickups have this mid- thing going on the makes the pickup artificially glassy, and I do like that tone alot on at least one of my guitars. Many pickups have that same sort of glassy hyped bell sound going down; EMG SA's ...Dimarzios HS-2/3's...
Its very nice, but it isnt the way a real vintage Strat pickup sounds like.
Duncan SSL-1's and Antiquities and others I'm sure , do that vintage tone way better..it all depends on if your guitar is good enough to reflect that, cause if it isnt it will tend to sound lifeless with a natural sounding pickup like a DUncan SSL-1 , and IMO thats why alot of people are happier with Fender pickups in the first place. They take a average nothing special sounding guitar and give them alot of this fake glassiness thats sounds pretty good.

Re: duncan surfers vs fender custom69

Thanks.

Well, I don't think what I have here is an average nothing special guitar. So the problem isn't with my guitar. In fact I doubt it's a problem for many, it's just that for me the bridge is pretty thin, and real low output.

Re: duncan surfers vs fender custom69

Thanks, no I understand, and believe me, I've been reading everything I can. It's just that so many of these posts...here and elsewhere, concern music I don't really play. Love Hendrix, SRV, etc, but don't play it. Play more pop stuff, more jangley rhythms, and some overdriven leads, but not blues, etc.

Put it this way, I love the way a Fender Nocaster Bridge PU sounds;) The Twangbanger actually sounds interesting, but the problem is, I really love the way this Strat sounds on all the other positions. It's really a "hi fi" super clear and precise sound, that I guess I will badly screw up if I change the bridge PU......

Need more guitars!

Thanks for the wecome, too;)

Tom

Tom,

I have the Antiquities with a Custom Hot Bridge in my Jeff Beck
Strat and I absolutely love them. The versatility of this set
astounds me. I can get all the Jimi, Clapton, SRV I want out of
these pups plus a whole lot more. With a few pedals in front
of my 59 RI I can dial in an absolute plethera of tones. The
Ants work very well with pedals, IMHO. I would be extremely
suprised if you did'nt like these pups. My .02. Good luck

Peace,

Darrin

Re: duncan surfers vs fender custom69

Thanks Darrin.

You know, I hate to say this, but...my son has a little Mexican Strat, we got it about 4 years ago. It's a basic Mex Strat, black, nothing special.

But I actually like the sound of the bridge PU on that...for what I do...better than the 69 in this Custom Shop Strat. I know that's heresy, but I mention it just to see if it tells anyone anything about what might sound better to me in this CS Strat. The Mexican Strat's bridge PU has more body to it than the 69, is louder, and really pretty cool sounding. It can get a little spitty and nasty at times. but I'm just mentioning it as a reference point. I also like the sound of the bridge PU in the current American Standard Strats, whatever that pickup is.

The only thing I could do Tom is repeat my previous post.
The set I mentioned (Antiquity 1 with the Texas Custom hot bridge)
is the absolute best set of strat pups in 31 years that I have ever
played. The bridge is definitely hotter, and with pedals you could
take it anywhere. Yet still it's vesatile as hell and you can get your
desired strat tones if you wish. Hope this helps.

Peace,

Darrin
