Duncan that ROARS!!??

Hey guys!

Anyone find a Duncan that they feel just flat out roars in the right situation? I am finding some high output pickups aren't open enough or seem constrained and too focused. One thing I noticed when I had the C-5 in my LP is that it was open and airy but hot enough to tear down walls with the right amp. I guess I am starting to feel that the C-5 may be this pickup that can roar.

Anyone else find this with a Duncan or have a favorite p'up that roars? :)

ps

Re: Duncan that ROARS!!??

Yes- the SH-5 Custom IS the pup that ROARS! The stock Duncan Designed pups in my Schecter Omen 7 were total junk compared to the Custom/'59 I installed. There's something in the way that notes seem to swell with a precise, percussive attack. The output is just right- not too hot and big enough to allow sweet harmonics and crunchy overtones to develop. As you probably guessed, I'm a HUGE fan of the Custom- I think it's the little pup that could!

Re: Duncan that ROARS!!??

I find the Custom a little cold compared to the JB in my current Dean Evo but need to give it time with the band. It is thick though.

I think the Custom - 5 roars because it is more open than the C-5 and has better clean.

Maybe to be fair I need to give it more time as I was told I'd like the Custom even over the highly sought after Fillmore pickups.

I think that an amp has alot more to do with 'roaring' than a pickup.

I think that can be a misconception. The amp plays a large role...but, I have used a variety of guitars/pickups through the same amp and there is a huge difference. :)

The JB roars! Incredible at home and in a band situation. I'd love to try out the Custom someday though.

I was just gonna say that.

Through my 50 watt Marshall, 59 Bassman or any of my modded/tweaked tweed and blackface Fenders, even the 59 Trembucker in my Strat ROARS!

I agree, the JB is my favorite Duncan and I have used the C-5, 59 and Custom but still choose the JB for it's rich warmth and singing sustain. I like that the bass on the JB is nice and tight and not over bearing.

Lew,

I am more asking if the amp was a constant. let's say you have an amp that roars like a Marshall. Istill find big variances between pickups like the C-5, JB, Custom, Rio BBQ, Giobsons....and so on.

Re: Duncan that ROARS!!??

The thing that is so nice about the JB is that defies logic...LOL! It doesn't seem like the hottest pickup but can do searing 80s metal to modern hard rock with conviction. Plus, it will still handle blues and jazz. I think it is Duncan's best.

Re: Duncan that ROARS!!??

you problem lies in using the vetta amp not the pups :smack:
if you want ROAR get a all tube mesa or bogner and then a 59 will ROAR! :laugh2:

Re: Duncan that ROARS!!??

I agree.

The JB is one of those pickups I love at first and then get tired of. I love it, but after a while it starts to sound to loud, to thick and the upper mids to bright and hard. So I replace it and then a year later try it again.

Well...you get the picture...

Re: Duncan that ROARS!!??

the JB is the most versatile pup ever.. anything from power metal, 80's metal, hard rock, split for strat like tones and down to country lol

and it can ROAR under the right circumstances

lew.. you're old >.< LOL

I am getting old...but I also have one of the first JB's: a very old DOUBLE CREAM from the 70's I believe. Been messing with JB's since the beginning...

I remember those little ads Seymour used to run in Guitar Player Magazine for his "pickup rewinding service". I sent him a real paf to rewind to JB specs...

He didn't do it! Instead he rewound it to about 9K and the pickup sounded killer...better than ever. Used it in my Les Paul for many, many years.

I do have a Peavey Ultra Plus with JJs and did have a Mesa Dual Rec and a Marshall modified '69 head that was nice. I have never had a problem getting good tone from the Vetta and in fact I prefer to gig with it any day. A perfect example is a good friend of mine in a local Philly band who plays a Diezel VH4 but lately has been using his Line 6 HD147 so I think the whole digital/tube thing is kind of a waste at this time.....for me at least.

I also am seeing my friend's band in Jersey tonight and the guy runs the same amp with a PRS CUstom 22...with no issues. The guy is a Marshall freak and leaves his Marshall JMP and Marshall power amp, plus effects rack at home. I am not slamming tubes........believe me, I love them....but that's not the issue.

Remember, i have a Dean Evo loaded with Rios and another Dean loaded with Duncans and both smoke through the amp. The problem was the LP because I wasn't used to the brighter tone nor the lower output pickups and I never gave it a chance with regards to some tweak time. Hehe.

I was just asking a question about Duncans...but didn't think you all would slam me for an amp choice.

Lew,

I think my perfect pickup would be a combination of the JB and C-5. I love the open and airy character of the C-5, but love the thick, singing mids of the JB. To bad there isn't a pickup right in the middle. The Custom didn't do it for me. I am hoping to get a Pearly Gates soon.
