I finally got a few of these in and had a chance to give one a good work out. Played mostly my Hamer Monoco with the Seth Lover neck and Custom Custom bridge and my Les Paul with the Tom Holmes a2 humbuckers through my Matchless SC-30. I really had a ball with the Tweak Fuzz and wound up wailing away for a good hour or more. Just playing solos and showing off for myself! :laugh2:
Very sweet, very smooth fuzz tones. Extremely nice compression that allowed me to squeeze notes out and then sustain them more or less forever if I'm playing loudly enough.
Kind of a blend of "old school" fuzz tone (Some of the tones reminded me of Jeff Beck's Yardbird tones...like on Heart Full of Soul, Mister You're A Better Man Than I and Heart Full of Soul. I love that semi-sick tone Beck gets on those tunes!) and more modern fuzz tone sounds.
Lots of bass! No mosquito tone from this baby...the tone is very wide and very deep. The six position TWEAK control seems to change the bass response and also shift the resonance a bit. It's fairly interactive with the GAIN control and I found myself readjusting the GAIN control (more than the VOLUME control) when I'd switch to another setting on the TWEAK control.
I really liked the way the Tweak Fuzz responded to my picking attack and the way I could shape the notes with my hands.
I found that I preferred the VOLUME set pretty much full up and the GAIN 3/4 to almost full up regardless of where the 6 position TWEAK control was set. That's the way the sample settings in the booklet are shown for most of the tones and that's the way I preferred those two controls for most of the settings too.
The Tweak Fuzz has more bass, and is smoother and compresses more easily than my Fulltone '69 Pedal, which is a Fuzz Face type pedal.
The TWEAK FUZZ also seems to leave a little "space" in the tone (unlike a denser fuzzier fuzz like the EH Big Muff) which is nice...it allows for more of the player's own personality to come through instead of making every player sound kind of the same.
For rythym playing the notes don't get overly smeary and although fuzzy, they stay fairly articulate. Alot of fuzz's don't sound good at all with chords and generate alot of out of tune harmonics that clash...but the Tweak Fuzz doesn't do that so much and I'd think more modern and younger players than myself would love this fuzz.
If I were to make one suggestion it would be that I'd like to see one setting that's a little more horn like or violin like...just a little more midrangey like a wah wah set to its sweet spot. I think with the way this puppy compresses and allows the shaping of the note with my picking attack and fingers that one more setting with a little of that old school Clapton Woman Tone built in would be very cool.
But that's just me...for younger and more modern players the TWEAK FUZZ is probably perfect just as it is. I had a ball with it!
