I finally got a few of these in and had a chance to give one a good work out. Played mostly my Hamer Monoco with the Seth Lover neck and Custom Custom bridge and my Les Paul with the Tom Holmes a2 humbuckers through my Matchless SC-30. I really had a ball with the Tweak Fuzz and wound up wailing away for a good hour or more. Just playing solos and showing off for myself! :laugh2:

Very sweet, very smooth fuzz tones. Extremely nice compression that allowed me to squeeze notes out and then sustain them more or less forever if I'm playing loudly enough.

Kind of a blend of "old school" fuzz tone (Some of the tones reminded me of Jeff Beck's Yardbird tones...like on Heart Full of Soul, Mister You're A Better Man Than I and Heart Full of Soul. I love that semi-sick tone Beck gets on those tunes!) and more modern fuzz tone sounds.

Lots of bass! No mosquito tone from this baby...the tone is very wide and very deep. The six position TWEAK control seems to change the bass response and also shift the resonance a bit. It's fairly interactive with the GAIN control and I found myself readjusting the GAIN control (more than the VOLUME control) when I'd switch to another setting on the TWEAK control.

I really liked the way the Tweak Fuzz responded to my picking attack and the way I could shape the notes with my hands.

I found that I preferred the VOLUME set pretty much full up and the GAIN 3/4 to almost full up regardless of where the 6 position TWEAK control was set. That's the way the sample settings in the booklet are shown for most of the tones and that's the way I preferred those two controls for most of the settings too.

The Tweak Fuzz has more bass, and is smoother and compresses more easily than my Fulltone '69 Pedal, which is a Fuzz Face type pedal.

The TWEAK FUZZ also seems to leave a little "space" in the tone (unlike a denser fuzzier fuzz like the EH Big Muff) which is nice...it allows for more of the player's own personality to come through instead of making every player sound kind of the same.

For rythym playing the notes don't get overly smeary and although fuzzy, they stay fairly articulate. Alot of fuzz's don't sound good at all with chords and generate alot of out of tune harmonics that clash...but the Tweak Fuzz doesn't do that so much and I'd think more modern and younger players than myself would love this fuzz.

If I were to make one suggestion it would be that I'd like to see one setting that's a little more horn like or violin like...just a little more midrangey like a wah wah set to its sweet spot. I think with the way this puppy compresses and allows the shaping of the note with my picking attack and fingers that one more setting with a little of that old school Clapton Woman Tone built in would be very cool.

But that's just me...for younger and more modern players the TWEAK FUZZ is probably perfect just as it is. I had a ball with it!

Lew,
With a strat using stock pickups how does the tweak fuzz work with giving the strat some fattening.

Sincerely,

If regular resistors and capacitors are used in the construction of the Tweak Fuzz, it might be possible to fine-tune one or more of the positions. (These days it seems like everybody is using huge integrated circuits or surface mounted components, which is a real bummer for the mad scientist experimenter-types... :( )

I just saw a stack of these at Guitar Center yesterday so I was checking here for more information- it looks like it is a real "boutique" box, but at a reasonable price!

Steve...When I was inside of my SFX-01 I noticed all of the tiny micro-technology components on the board..I'd bet the Tweak Fuzz would be of that same technology...I had the same "modders" thoughts after reading lew's post my darnself... :)

Re: Duncan Tweak Fuzz...cool!

I got one too, and it sounds great. I dig the "AM radio" setting. It's a scruffy sounding pedal, and I mean that in a good way! Excellent value.

Thanks guys!

Some of the settings are a bit "scruffy"...that's what I was alluding to when I said the tone reminded me a little of Jeff Beck's tone with the Yardbirds or even on the Truth album. And also what I meant when I said the tones had a little bit of "space" to them, allowing for your own touch and personality to be expressed.

When I hear differant guys playing through a pedal like the Big Muff thier licks might be differant but thier tone is always very similar. It seems to me that the TWEAK FUZZ leaves a little more "room" in the tone for a player's own personality to come through. I really liked that about it: I always sounded like me. Lew

I'll try it out this weekend with my Strats. I had so much fun with my Les Paul and Hamer that I never got around to plugging in my Fenders. :) Thanks for asking! BTW, if a Strat player is looking for a pedal to fatten up a Strat's tone but retain a fairly transparant tone, I don't think there's anything better than the Duncan Pickup Booster for that. It's my favorite (along with my Boss DS-1) for the clean boost thing. Just a great pedal, IMO, for boosting the output and thickening up the tone without adding alot of distortion. I like the Pickup Booster better than any stock Tubescreamer TS-9's or TS-808's. Lew

There goes the rent! Lew you've very sold me on the Tweak Fuzz as IMO I read it as a booster that lets the 'natural' sound of your guitar through. Just the thing for my slide guitar. Think John Butler/Rose Tattoo grit.
Now if I can get a P90 style PUP that I can fit to my Donmo without major surgery then I'd be a very happy camper!
P.S. Check out donmo.com if your after a resonator, mines the the glavonised cutaway to Don's right.

Re: Duncan Tweak Fuzz...cool!

wow......this sounds exactly like what i want.......i want a smooth fuzz that can get really compressed sounding....that am radio setting sounds cool.........i dont like wide open gain tones.......is this more of a compressed sound for lead tone? good sustain?
