duncans for metal

Re: duncans for metal

They're voiced for a very PAFish tone - compared to something like a DiMarzio or EMG, the difference in voicing is like a slap in the face. The latter two are suited much more to modern styles and tone.

Re: duncans for metal

Obviously some people don't have a good enough gain stage on their amp. Or maybe it's the eq? I personally own both Duncans and EMG's and I've had Dimarzio in the past, the long past. The Duncan Distortion is perfectly voiced for metal. It's what I have in my basswood Dean ML Undertaker. I pipe that through my Peavey JSX and 4-12 cab. In the loop I use a Behringer parametric eq and an Ibanez soundtank chorus w/ the rate and depth turned down and I use the delay time knob to sweep through the chorus range like a variable doubler. The high gain channel is nothing short of CRUSHING! So yes, I would recommend the Duncan Distortion heavily.
The EMG's are perfect for metal also. Really crunchy and the pinch harmonics are second to none but you need plenty of space in the electronics cavity for a battery. Really it's all about what sounds good to YOUR ears, not someone else.

And "EMG's would make a toilet seat sound good" Is that the same thing as "Make a 59 LP sound the same as a toilet seat" There is a message in there....

Not really. Don't try to read what I haven't written here. :smokin:

I just wanted to make the point that EMGs are affected by the tone of the wood, but not nearly as much as passive pickups are.

I wouldn't recommend the Detonators above Duncans, but if he's on a budget as tight as he said, then they will do the job nicely.

Re: duncans for metal

I just cheked out DiMarzio, cant say I like all of them that much except the sonic D I like that one, might consider that one nice n heavy. What does anyone think to matching that up with a swinhead pickup? (www.http://www.swinesheadpickups.co.uk/) They dont seem to bad for metal, I was thinking maybe pair sonic D in the bridge with a Swineshead Venom in the neck,,,any good do you reckon?

Actually come to think of it would there be any kinda problems with mixing pick ups from different manufactures?
