Duncans in an Ibanez 335 clone?

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a set of SD 50th Anniversary HB's from MF for my Ibanez Artcore AS-73 (335 clone). I'm looking for a more vintage tone than the OEM ACH pups offer. I plan on replacing all of the electronics with high quality components at that time too. Has anyone installed these (or similar) on a semi-hollow? Are there any other issues than the usual semi-hollow accessibility PITA.

I believe these pups are not wax potted. Would it be advisable to pot them for use on a semi?

I have a set of Seth's in my Sheraton. They are unpotted and work very well in that instrument. I don't think potting is necessary as you probably wouldn't be playing high gain amps with that kind of guitar.

Re: Duncans in an Ibanez 335 clone?

Short answer : yes.

I had a Seth in the neck of an AS-100 and it was beautiful, warm and
buttery but with a funny jangly sparkle from the unpottedness. Unless
you plan on standing right in front of a cranked stack, don't get them
potted. This was with the A2 magnet, I know the 50'th anniversary
come with either A2 or A5 and would recommend the A2.

I don't know what you hope to get from the bridge pickup. I paired
the Seth with a JB since I wanted the bridge sound to be a bit over the
top. Tons of people would recommend the Custom Custom for the
bridge.

My next LP like guitar will have Seths in both positions. If you listen to
the pickup clips, the Seth bridge sounds really nice and specs out a little
hotter than some of the other bridge pickups.

+1 for Seths, wouldn't have anything else in a 335 clone

Re: Duncans in an Ibanez 335 clone?

Those are great guitars, and with a pickup change they should be even better. Seths would be a very good choice.

I have to ask -

UMMM WHAT's WRONG WITH THE SUPER 58s? They are killer. Have you considered the 57 classics? I like those too!

Re: Duncans in an Ibanez 335 clone?

Nothing says 335 type guitar like Seths. Get the A2 versions.

Do they put the 58's in the lower end models?

I tried an Epi Dot with 57 Classics in it - the bass was out of control. I didn't like it.

Re: Duncans in an Ibanez 335 clone?

Wax potting is not needed. Most of the problems with squeeling are from playing at home with lots of gain and standing facing your amp at close quarters...like a couple of feet away... So don't do that! The Seths are unbeatable in a semi hollowbody guitar if you're looking for killer vintage paf style tone. Lew

hey man, I've got the similar guitar as yours. Please post the result after you tried :D So I can copy your setup if it's good :D

Re: Duncans in an Ibanez 335 clone?

They put the IBZ 58s in the lower end AS80s
They also put them in JAPAN made models

YOU ARE RIGHT - AS73s don't have 58s.

I LIKE THE 58s! great sound, balanced, low output, sweet! Not the best sound on earth, but I DO like 'em, as do guys like Scofield and many who have recorded with them.
