Hi,
I have a 2002 PRS CE-22 maple top, a guitar that I love.
The pickups are Dragons II, they're excellent, no doubt about that, but now they are not what I need and they're a bit too bright for my amp, a Traynor YCV40WR.
I like the modern sound they have, great defined notes on lower strings and great higher frequencies presence, but the lower notes are too boomy and the higher are too bright, and I can't tame them with a different eq on the amp.
I'd like to use Seymour Duncans (but I'm open to Dimarzio too) because they're cheap, widely available here in Europe, easy to sell on the used market and a standard used by many pros.
But I'm afraid about using the standard 59+JB set because I think it's designed for wuite dark sounding guitars, while I have the opposite problem. My guitar is bright, it's not a Les Paul.
I want a very very very WARM sound, and they must work very well with distortions, I don't play metal but hard rock like Queens of stone age and Pearl Jam like stuff.
First of all, modern or vintage sounding PUs?
59 - I'm afraid it will be too bright for my needs, otherwise I like that SD talks about it as a mid scooped pu. Will I have the same problem on higher frequencies that I have now?
SH-11 custom custom - it's described on Duncan web site exactly for what I need on the bridge, except for the spongier bass response, and it's used by Josh Homme main guitar player and singer of Queens of th stone age. It's balanced for brighter instruments, and they talk about "warm and smooth highs". But aren't the Alnico II magnets brighter than Alnico V?
SH-14 custom 5 - it's the Alnico V version of the previous, but it's suggested for darker and warmer instruments. Maybe not my ticket.
APH-1 Alnico II pro - for brighter guitars, another time described as my PU except for spongier bass response, I love the fact it can be sweet on cleans. It's used on the neck by the other QOTSA guitar player.
SH-PG1 Pearly gates - they seems another very good option, they are used by Allman Brothers band's ****ey Betts (and I LOVE the ABB), but they can give too open and rich higher frequencies.
SH-55 Seth Lover - maybe perfect on the neck, but I'm afraid that since they're not wax potted they could cause problema with huge amount of gain. I don't have a modern high gain amp, but I want to be free to play with a Soldan or a Diezel if I have the possibility and I use heavy fuzzes and distortions.
Help me, cause I really can't make my decision. (even if Alnico II proi on neck and custom custom on bridge seem the best set)
Thanks a lot.
Marco.
