Re: Dunlop 65 Ultimate Lemon oil??

DANG IT!!! Ultimate Lemon oil!! Misspelled the blinking title...

Re: Dunlop 65 Ultiamate Lemon oil??

If it has the cottony top that the oil must soak through to get out,,,,,,,,,watch it, because that can get soft over time and pop off when you're holding the bottle upside down. Big mess!!!
IMO it's better to just take the soft-top off right when you get it, and then just soak a small piece of cloth instead.

The dunlop stuff is good but I don't notice it doing any better of a job than regular Old English Oil.

Re: Dunlop 65 Ultiamate Lemon oil??

I've used the Dunlop stuff for a few years now and it works well. I don't know if it's any better or worse than other brands.

Re: Dunlop 65 Ultiamate Lemon oil??

I've used the Dunlop, it's fine. Currently have a bottle of Gerlitz Guitar Honey. I think the Dunlop is less expensive. Personally, I don't have a preference either way. They are both fine.

I'd be keen to also find out more about the Stewart MacDonald fretboard conditioner.

Using it with the fretboard cleaner works great. the cleaner is key.

Re: Dunlop 65 Ultiamate Lemon oil??

I use the Dunlop 01/02 fretboard cleaner/conditioner. Probably similar to the 65 stuff.

Re: Dunlop 65 Ultiamate Lemon oil??

I don't think the '65 is a particlarly good vintage, it's a little dry with a somewhat peculiar aftertaste. I prefer the '63, which has a slightly more fruity, full-bodied taste with a fresh aftertaste reminiscent of summer evenings on the Rhine.

Considering the price, the '67-'68 is a great vintage too, an 'entry-level' drop, if you will.

My experience is similar to others... I use it, I like it, and I have no idea whether it's any better or worse than anything else!

$5/pint for this stuff. I use it on my 2 Carvin boards because they get the full body and neck treatment also (tung-oiled body/necks).
I still use the Dunlop 02 on everything else for convenience, but when it runs out I'll probably just fill that small handy bottle with the Old English.
Seems just as good to me,, of course I'm not seeing things at the cellular level and all lol.

Even using it on some other things around the house now and then, I can't see it not lasting a decade or more.

Essentially mineral oil with synthetic citrus odour to make it work for the nostrils.

If you can buy pure mineral oil then you can do better price-wise.

But the oil isn't a cleaner......unless its being used as a lubricant for a scrubber.

Re: Dunlop 65 Ultiamate Lemon oil??

Music Nomad makes the best fretboard oil, polish, etc. I love their stuff. I bought the cleaning kit with the cleaner, polish and fretboard oil and have actually had friends bring their guitars to me to have them cleaned. If you count the number of beers they've bought me in exchange for these cleanings, I've made back my $30, am probably like $50 ahead, and still have more than half of all three bottles. Your mileage may vary. :smokin:

Re: Dunlop 65 Ultiamate Lemon oil??

I've used naptha to clean, when needed. Zippo lighter fluid is naptha, or mostly naptha. It may have other things added, but you can buy naptha in the paint section of hardware stores. I use the paint section Naptha for lots of cleaning stuff, including filling my Zippos. For cleaning fretboards, I use it sparingly, on a just damp cloth to get surface grime off the fretboard. I don't let it soak in.

I've also used the Lemon Oil made for furniture as a conditioner. I think it's mostly mineral oil but I worry that it may have more and/or stronger solvents than actual fretboard products. Not sure, so I don't use it. The stuff I have (I think it's Old English or Pledge brand) is also thicker than the Gerlitz that I'm using now, which is pretty thin. Maybe it's the same thing but for 6 or 7 bucks, a bottle of Gerlitz or Dunlop lasts plenty long enough that I'm just more comfortable using that.

Re: Dunlop 65 Ultiamate Lemon oil??

One thing I would add is that I used to use the Dunlop fretboard conditioner and it worked well. But since I started using the Dunlop lemon oil, I use it far less often. The conditioner would dry out far quicker and I would have to clean the gunk and reapply 2 - 3 times a year. I haven't used the lemon oil since first application or felt the need to clean the board since last September on my #1.

Re: Dunlop 65 Ultiamate Lemon oil??

I ordered some more Dunlop 65 polish as I love that stuff and went ahead and got the Dunlop lemon oil and fretboard cleaner. Honestly, I rarely ever have to clean my boards. I just lemon oil em a couple times a year. I always play with clean hands and rarely get much mung build up. Only when Ive bought used guitars have I really had to clean. Even then, I usually just rub vigorously with the lemon oil and or a tooth brush along the frets.. And, recently, my Japanese Squier strat for some reason while sitting in storage developed a sticky black substance on the frets.. Incidently, this guitar is I think my only one that also has a maple board. I did use lighter fluid to clean the frets off.
Thanks for all the input!!

Re: Dunlop 65 Ultiamate Lemon oil??

I haven't tried the Dunlop lemon oil but I do use the guitar honey and really love it. I use it every other string changing. For me that's about two or three times a year. Good stuff

Reading this, I sprayed my drink to my monitor again. Thanks bro' :)

On the subject, I've been using the object for, ugh, 20 years or so and my guitars seem to really like all kinds of fluids from the big D.
