Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

Dunlop Ultex 1.14mms baby... nothing else comes close for my tastes. They're articulate, feel right and far more reliable than any other pick I've used. They're my end-all pick as far as I'm concerned. I found it and I'm done.

The Gator ones looked cool because they were supposed to help keep from picks slipping, but the finish wore off way too fast and didn't feel right. Tortex are great picks, I just like the clarity, durability and snap that the Ultex offers.

Love the Ultex. Tortex is cool, too, but I don't like the way that they get slippery as they wear and I find my picking is cleaner with Ultex.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I've never used Ultex so I'll pick up a pack when I go to GC (I'm NOT using my 20% off coupon on that, though, LOL)

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

Tortex, but only because I've never used Ultex. Gator grips are sweet, as are Jazz IIIs, and I really dig the Planet Waves take on Tortex (they're like 1/100 thinner).

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I use the green .88 Tortex. They are just what feels right. I also have some of those "Big Stubby" picks. Not the 2.0mm ones but the 1.0mm.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I've used the green Tortex for ~20 years. I've just recently switched to the Dunlop Gator Grip in 2mm thickness. It has a chamfered edge and is a bit smaller than the Tortex, but not jazz small. It also doesn't sound dull like most thick picks. It sounds about equivalent to the purple Tortex.

I love Dunlop picks. But...what is that powder that is on the picks? :laugh2: It's like the greatest thing. Once the powder is gone, I need to grab a new one!

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

Never used Ultex. Love the green .88 Tortex. I know everyone seems to say Ultex last longer, but I can't comment on life, since I have a six-month old Tortex that isn't worn one bit - except it's super-smooth from finger rub. I am a very soft picker though.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I liked tortex, but now religiously use Gators, wish they didn't lose that nice "new" feel though

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I prefer the Gators; with my second choice being the Tortex, though the Ultex is a very close third. At home, it really doesn't matter...but when I gig, it's always the Gators.

And though I do a bit of experimenting, I'm pretty locked into the 1.14mm thickness.

Ultex, for me. I destroy Tortex picks, and Ultexs last much longer. They are also stiffer than Tortex's of the same guage. And they sound better for me, brighter and snappier.

I couldn't have come up with a better explanation. Ultex is all I use now for these reasons already stated. I like the attack better than Tortex (a little snappier and brighter), easy to maintain grip, and they last a long time. I personally dig the appearance, too. Only problem with the appearance is that they have a tendency to camouflage themselves if they get away from you. Stiffer than same-gauge Tortex, so consider that before buying. I'm currently using .73s, but am going to try 1.0s soon. Check 'em out. They're the picks for me...maybe for you, too.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

With the possible exception of Pick-Boy Meta-Carbonate picks for certain things, Tortexes are the perfect picks for me. I use the blues, purples, and sometimes the greens. Not only do they feel the best to me, but they last. I bought 75 blues and 75 purples for cost when I worked in a music store back about 8 years ago. I still have about 3/4 of those picks in the original bags, unused.

I just wish they were made full sized with thumb hoops on them. As it is, I epoxy them to metal or plastic thumb picks when I want a thumb pick.

Ultex 1.14mm Sharps for me. Less messy on the guitar, a bit more slick with the strings, and the sharp point makes picking it a bit more quick. Plus, I notice more pop/snap in tone with the Ultex picks. I know it more than just the sharp point that makes the difference as I have played with sharp and jazz cut Tortex picks, too. I still prefer Ultex.

My favs are the carbon fiber max grip black Jazz III's! they are kinda hard to find tho. I get em from Sweetwater. Love these picks...
