Dwayne got a facelift

I wasn't real happy with the results of the first go 'round, playability wise mostly my fault because I cheaped out on the neck, it just wasn't right. So it was out of commission for a few months but I got it back maybe 2 weeks ago and it freaking kills now! Still got a few tweaks to do but totally useable beastie now.

My buddy scored me a real clean, used Warmoth neck that's pretty good so far. It's a little different than what I would order but the price was right and it is a very nice neck. The compound radius is taking some getting used to. I do a lot of double stops and bends and it can be a little tricky to grab them sometimes it is so flat. I'll tell you what though, it is a hell of a nice piece of wood, beautiful figuring on the maple, real dark rosewood and the fretwork is spot on! It adds a lot to the sound of the guitar and this thing sustains like no Strat I've ever had now. Added some Graphtech dtring trees too.

Changed the pups around a little too. The SSL-5b, SSL-1n stayed but the GFS 59 in the middle is long gone, it did nothing for the guitar really. It's a very bland pickup overall. I replaced it with some mutant disco'd red DiMarzio that is half a Super D and half an X2N, about 15k output. I am going to put a split in for it to broaden it's range and usefulness but it sounds pretty cool as is, very thick and dark but mix it with the SSL-5 and what a cool sound! I want a little more quack when mixed with the neck so I dropped it low and brought up the hex screws which helped but if I split it I think it'll be great.

Still want to get a real low chrome bucker ring for the DiMarzio and 2 chrome knobs for the vol and tone. Then I have to figure out some graphic for the headstock. I may spray it to match but I am not sure yet.

Awesome. I love the compound radius necks. I've got two now and had my first one since 1993. Warmoth too.

Interesting pu combo in that axe; gotta love an over the top mutant pu, and a red DiMarzio at that. Is the tone a bit different depending on which way the bar coil is facing?

By the way, what do you use to fill unused pot holes? Looks like a rubber grommet of some sort. I'm looking for something to do the same job.

Very cool. BUT that headstock NEEDS a logo Maybe this:

I did not! That's just a vicious rumor. There has been no "work" done on my ugly mug. :) BTW: I like that Wayne Kramer, looks righteous.

I would imagine flipping the pup would give you a little different sound but I haven't tried doing that. I do think it is a MegaDrive btw, no markings so I wasn't sure. It came out of some whacky cheapo BC Rich my buddy found in the trash. I cleaned it up for him and made it play well enough in exchange for the pickup, pays to save those crappy old EPi pickups ;)

Yeah that is a rubber grommet filling the hole. I just went to the hardware store with the guard and found one that fit. I've used some chrome ones in the past that they use for filling holes in sinks but couldn't find one when I was there this time. I used some old straplock buttons in the past, thought they were Dunlop but I can't find them anymore, they were Surfer's Crosses and looked really cool. The grommet works fine though and is sort of stealthier.

Yeah I am working on it, felt bad covering up the pretty grain though. Got a few ideas but everything I've tried looks like bad VH painting so far.

Re: Dwayne got a facelift

All you need to do is split that hum, add a complicated preamp/switching system, and you can play Jerry Garcia riffs all day. Or just skip all that and play lots of 1/8 notes.

Re: Dwayne got a facelift

I have a wiring harness from a Bich I could throw in there before I head to Shakedown Street but the split'll do.

1/8 notes? What do you think I practice Paganini with a metronome?

Re: Dwayne got a facelift

I was trumped! Why didn't I think to use Swarovski elements instead of rattle cans, drats!
