Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

Holy Smokes!
I have never been much of a country bumpkin, but as I got into Wilco's two most recent albums, I have really began to appreciate this stuff. Particularly older stuff like Johnny Cash, but also some newer stuff, some of these guys have guitar players that are simply amazing!
Case in point: I saw Dwight Yoakum on Imus in the Morning (MSNBC, 6:00 AM MST) today. He & his band played two tunes & just burned it down both times. He had a great guitar player in the band, who was playing a big Gretsch hollowbody, but had a tele & a strat in the wings. He fed the signal through a Vox AC30 & a Fender Vibroking, not sure if he was using any effects (though a great deal of reverb was evident). ANYWAY, this kid could play, did so tastefully & with a whole ton of attitude.
Good stuff.
Best,
MG

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

Dwight is an incredible songwriter and always has a great band. Pete Anderson used to be his guitar player and he's great.

There aren't too many performers (country or otherwise) who have written as many great songs as Dwight has. Unfortunately he's too country for country but that's a debate for another thread. Glad you liked it!

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

i saw them on Conan O Brien last night........guitar player used a tele with a b-bender i think.....sounded slick!

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

Dwight Yoakum's guitar player is named Pete Anderson and has several endorsement deals, including a Larrivee signature edition acoustic. He was featured in the June 'Guitar Player' magazine. (the one with Santana on the cover....I think that's June)

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

I thought Pete was no longer with Dwight...time to Google!

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

Pete did a solo album recently, but I hadn't heard anything about him leaving Dwight Yoakum...but I'm not sure.....googling as well

EDIT: You're right. Dwight's new album came out last Tuesday and it was his first album EVER without Pete Anderson. Dwight produced it himself. My first album I ever owned was Dwight Yoakum ...and I definitely need to go pick up his new one!

Yeah, I saw Dwight's new video the other day & coulda' sworn the guy on Tele looked just like Gilby Clarke!!!!! hahahahaha

I heard Pete left a while back, but who knows....stranger things have happened.

Between Pete Anderson, Brent Mason, Dan Huff & Johnny Hiland....then there's Keith Urban & Brad Paisley, there are some Tele spanking dudes out there!!!

Man yeah...the sad part about country music is that with the exception of Brad Paisley and Keith Urban...you really have to get away from Nashville to find the great artists :) I lived in Nashville for a while, working a friend of mine into the industry and going to school to learn the industry there in Murfreesboro at MTSU....and let me tell you, it made me HATE the country music industry...made me want to move to Texas :)

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

I find myself digging the older rebel stuff or the newer on the fringe stuff.

Stuff like Steve Earle was too cool...I like Dwight...Drive-By Truckers...Wilco/Uncle Tupelo...my boys, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers.

More "rock with a twang"...that's my kinda' stuff!!!

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

yeah, I got to see Wilco at the Jazz and Heritage Festival down in New Orleans and they were freakin great..love Uncle Tupelo, and Drive By Truckers play around here a lot. Steve Earle was a great find for me..still need to find more of his stuff

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

Steve Earle is the man!!!

I play "Hardcore Troubador" & "I Feel Alright" all the time!

Although I prefer Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers version of "I Feel Alright", Steve Earle is some good stuff!

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

yeah, I'm definitely going to have to get into his stuff a bit more...friend of mine has like 4 albums, so I'll probably just borrow those and do some hardcore listening :)

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

I'm not a huge Country fan but i do know some of those players are like Steve Vai's of the Country world!!! The only Country cd i own is a live concert of Dwight with Pete Anderson. Great player! Please Please Baby is catchy..... I'll listen to that one minute and next OZZY and next some thing else..... My favourite player Pete Townshend took a lot of his solo style from Country Players of the late 50's early 60's

You have good taste! I also recommend listening to The Sadies. They're a Canadian band, so you may have a tough time finding their stuff down there, but it's well worth it.

Re: Dwight Yoakam on IMUS!

Pete Anderson is definitely not with Dwight Yoakam anymore. They apparently had a pretty bad falling out. I've got a friend who knows Pete, so I can confirm that this is absolutely true.

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

I'm not a big country fan, but I've always liked Dwight Yokum. The guitarist was definitely not Anderson. The guitarist did play a tele on the first song or two.

Re: Dwight Yoakum on IMUS!

Dwight is the real deal! i've always dug his music and style...definitely a unique feel to his songs...he's pretty much respected as an "artist" by everyone!

1000 miles from nowhere is a super cool song!
