what kind of micing is a dynamic microphone used for? close?....not so close?

Typically close, but nothings ever in stone.

Yeah, they aren't as sensitive as condensors, but can take some serious spl. The SM57 is the classic guitar cab mic because it can take some ultra loud amps.

The other reason the SM57 is the "classic" close-mic is cause it only does what it does, and it does it the same way EVERY time. Combine one of those right up on the cone, and a condenser about 10 feet out and 6 feet up, and you get into the really classic setup. Slip annother 57 behind the open cabs, and mix some of that in there too, and you get a bit closer to some of Jimmy Page's studio tricks.
