E-II Eclipse

Hey guys and girls,

I was looking for a new guitar, and was browsing local ads for single cuts, when I stumbled upon an E-II branded Eclipse. Quick Google Search reveals they're supposedly "made in japan" by ESP. The guitar in question is basically mint (light scratch on bridge pickup), goes 600 USD with a gig-bag, the ad says it originally had EMGs but the owner swapped into a JB and 59 set, swapping the pots for CTS. From the pics, the guitar seems flawless, but I worry since I know virtually nothing about E-II.

What's the deal with these guitars? Are they really made in Japan by ESP, or are they manufactured with Edwards outside of Japan and only put together and setup in Japan - like Edwards? Are they totally made in China like Grassroots but to a better woods and hardware? Is an E-II worth the bucks?

Besides two Gibsons, and an Epiphone, I own Edwards E-LP85SD, and I really dig that guitar. Coincidentally, I also paid it around 600 bucks, so I'm guessing the E-II should be similar quality?

Thanks peeps,
Pumpkin

Incredible guitar, if its the real deal, I would buy that baby ASAP. Made by Japanese craftsman, BUY IT. The LTD is not a MIJ guitar, the E-II is.

Oh wow, seems I've stumbled on a quiet a deal then. :-O

Thanks Ben! I'll ask for a meet up, and check if it's got serial and if it looks like a real deal. If it is, I'm snatching it. :)

Thankyou!

Re: E-II Eclipse

The E-II used to be the Standard Series MIJ ESP guitars, they just rebranded them as E-II to differentiate them from their higher end custom shop models. Kind of similar to what PRS did with their S-2 line, but IMO better than the PRS.

Re: E-II Eclipse

If that's real ESP / E-II then that's a great price considering new ones will cost you over 2000 Euros...

So, the seller is completely clueless or it's a fake.

This, exactly. I'd be pretty suspicious and careful when checking it out. It's too good of a deal.

Re: E-II Eclipse

I had an ESP Eclipse that was an outstanding guitar, MIJ, first rate all the way

Re: E-II Eclipse

Yeah, that's the guitar, except this one's matte black. Since I personally don't dig the EMGs, the modification, if done properly, is good news to me - as I love Duncan pups.

Will do!

Thanks for the help, guys!

Mmmm... I had a matte black Eclipse I with a set of black Duncans in it, and that will forever be one of the great ones that got away. Wish I still had her. I also had a quilted black cherry Eclipse with EMGs in it at the same time. I don't miss it. The black one was special. I bought the black one used for $800 and considered it a steal. So go for it!!!

Btw... I've also owned a pair of Ltd EC1000s, and at least 4-6 EC-400/401s. I gotta say that all were very close in quality to the real ESPs... especially the EC-1000s. I would say that a person is a good 90% of the way there with an Ltd in my experience. The ESP will have some higher-end fit&finish in general, but I've found 400 series and up Ltds to have excellent build quality. Which is why I often recommend them to players who can't afford high-end stuff. No one gives you more guitar for your dollar than Ltd, Schecter, and a few other Asian import brands. Which is why I always bristle when new guitar players are told to get a Squire or MIM Fender as their first guitar as a foregone conclusion. Nope... for the money you can a FAR better guitar than a Fender.
