Re: eagles hotel california

my ears say one is a tele one is a lester on the record but this video is live he is using an sg doubleneck instead....go to 4:24
here is an interview with Don Felder (the guy on the gibson)

“I used and still use Fender Tweed Deluxe amps. My favorite one that I used on “Hotel California” and “One of These Nights” is a mid-50′s model. I also played a Blackface Deluxe (non-reverb) with a Vox Silver bell speaker in it.On the road I now use a Blackface Deluxe Reverb (re-issue) as they are very easy to find and can take a beating and keep on ticking.

1959 Les Paul and Tweed Deluxe. Walsh played a Tweed Deluxe as well... not the same amp 'cause they were working their parts out simultaneously over two days.

More here.

Re: eagles hotel california

I remember that back then Joe Walsh had some input on the orange Boss "Cube 60" amps that came out, and he said he used one of those on Hotel California (the album), but I don't know on which songs or how much he used it. He wanted that amp to be voiced like a Fender Twin. I think they used different amps on different songs.

Re: eagles hotel california

I have read more than once that both guitars were played thru tweed Deluxe amps. Fielder used his 59 Burst and Walsh used a Telecaster. If you listen closely the second guitar has a very slow phase shifter on it...nobody ever mentions that part!

Re: eagles hotel california

It could be a cocked wah or just the way his extremely nasal amp sounded. If he had a Silver Bell in a Blackface he was very much shooting for mid shelf. The oldold Tweeds and the generation of junk amps like Valcos that were made around the same time are incredibly nasally with lows and highs rolling way off and, consequentially, sound totally awesome when cranked. Jack White made a career out of that broken nose Silvertone sound and i love him for it.
Yea, my assumption is Felder used a blisteringly loud Tweed with your standard recording tricks like compression, maybe a cocked wah and noise reduction at the desk.

Re: eagles hotel california

When I saw that concert in 77 Joe played a Strat and Felder played the Doubleneck sounded very much like the album but way louder.

What pedal would that have been back then? Or was it a studio thing?

It was released late in 76 so there were several phase shifters on the market at that time. To my ears it always sounded like an MXR with the rate nearly off...

This has me thinking, tomorrow I'm gonna learn the solo sections and fire up my phase 45 and 90!!!

Re: eagles hotel california

The hardware might be in dispute but notes chosen are perfect.

Hotel Cal. It might be the perfect solo. Felder and Walsh are both waaaaay under rated. Both are right up there in the 70's list of guitarists who get it done at all costs.

Re: eagles hotel california

Great sounds and playing. It is a textbook solo. It is nice to see that great sounds were coaxed from combo amps that us mortals can afford. Big stacks must be nice for arenas but who need to blow his head off in the studio room?

Another poster said the solos were worked out over a few sessions. Would it not be cool to hear those licks being developed?

Re: eagles hotel california

I just spent sometime down in the lab with an old Deluxe (not tweed but for sure in the ball park!) a 58 reissue LP and a nice 57 style Esquire.

I stand by my earlier statement of Felder on a Burst and Walsh on a Tele as well as the vintage Fender (maybe indeed tweed ear?) and a Phase 90 on Joe's parts make them really pop...speed control all the way down (ala Van Halen but before Eddie!) and it's very close to the album version.

Re: eagles hotel california

I read that they played several different takes of the solo, then pieced together a tape of the best parts, re-learned it and re-recorded that solo just like the spliced one. This was in an interview back when it came out.

Sounds believable and a good methodology, albeit much harder in the analog tape days.
