Earvana nuts - any opinions, or experiences?

The tone is closer to a graphite nut than a bone nut, so if you wanted the brightness of bone, I could see not using it. But if you're just going to use a graphite nut anyway, give the Earvana a try. Trust me, it's not a gimmick.

This is probably where I heard it :laugh2:

Yeah, it has a tone similar to that of a graphite nut, even though the material it's made of isn't actually graphite. It also has the slipperyness of graphite, so it works well with tremolos.

But if you look at it that way we would never have the humbucker, because after all, single coils work, right, no need to make something better. (Invented to kick the hum = better back then).

There would be no forward evolution of the instrument if tuning problems or other things weren't being consistently improved upon and changed. Look how much the electric guitar has changed since it's invention due to stuff like this.

I knew you'd see it my way. :laugh2:

Good points . . . and the most I've ever been quoted in one thread. :laugh2:

I'll give one a shot. ;)

Actually, you're supposed to file both the base and the top so that they don't stick out and poke you.

Ryan

Thanks dude. I thought about it before, but then I caught the lazy bug :)

And I must say, I believe that due to Tonepros and Earvana/Feiten, in the future all guitars will be fitted with something similar.

Re: Earvana nuts - any opinions, or experiences?

This whole Earvana concept is all well and good.. I hope all guitars come stock with these soon

Re: Earvana nuts - any opinions, or experiences?

Personally, I believe any difference in tone that results from a different nut material is very small. Everything affects everything in my opinion, but some things make such a small difference that it's not even worth worrying about.

Ryan

I agree, and wouldn't it mainly affected unfretted notes?

"Better" is a subjective term, but I like the Earvana system for the reasons I listed above. The one advantage the Feiten system does have is that it can be used on guitars with locking nuts. The drawback to that is that it requires shaving off a small piece of the fretboard. Earvana has a locking nut version of their nut coming out soon, they have a pic of it on their web page. Not the prettiest looking contraption, but I bet it works great.

Ryan

Ryan do you have a link to the locking nut pic? I went to their site and couldn't find it. Thanks!

It's at the bottom of this page http://earvana.com/oem.html

Re: Earvana nuts - any opinions, or experiences?

To address the "how does it sound" question, I found this in the FAQ on their site:

"Q. What is the material made of?
A. The proprietary and unique material formulation of our nut
is high-pressure injection molded to create a brighter, tusk-like
tone while producing slip lubrication properties superior to
graphite. Get the best of both-have a bright bone sound with
slip properties superior to graphite!"
