Ebay payment with paypal

I am going to pay for an ebay auction i won through paypal for the first time. The seller told me that there is a 4% paypal fee......Does this really exist or is he trying to make me pay for something he is supposed to pay himself?????

he's not allowed to ask for that. Report him to ebay. Paypal takes a small fee for some transactions, like credit cards, and I think it's like 3%. Just tell him it's against ebay rules for him to ask for that and you'll report him to ebay if he insists on it. They would suspend his account.

There's nothing wrong with someone asking you to pay the PayPal fee, but they must say that upfront, in the auction, and reveal the amount.

4% is gouging.

I was under the impression that you could not ask the buyer to pay the fee in your auction. I have also never seen this in an auction's description.

For sales on Ebay I believe it's bad juju to ask the buyer to cover PayPal fees, that's part of listing your stuff on Ebay and accepting Paypal. If the fees bother you that much, mark your reserve or BIN price up a few bucks in the first place. A normal auction you can't really do anything about.

Now, private sales like you find in the Trading Post here, asking for the fees is up to you.

I tried listing the PP fee a long time ago and that got my auction pulled. eBay doesn't take kindly to any implications of added fees to buyers.

I believe the last time I checked, the PP fee was something like 3.75%, so the guy really wasn't far off (and yes, I know for a fact that it's more than 3%). What he is doing is illegal according to eBay's rules.

If the seller doesn't indicate that he'll take PayPal in the auction, he could probably wiggle into making you pay a few extra bucks to use a payment method that he didn't say he'd accept.

As for the amount of the fees, fees might be different in Europe. I do believe they charge more for international transactions.

Something tells me that some one (or two) is gonna end up with negative feedback in this deal if it goes down.

and that guy is still a scumbag for asking for it lol. if you want to use paypal to get money, you pay the fee for it IMO or adjust your selling price.

Actually it's 3.8% for credit cards and 2.8% for direct transfers. It is against ebay rules to ask for it period. I put it in one of my auctions and they shut the auction down, which I think is BS cuz if the person agrees to pay then wtf, why not let them? It's only fair to the seller. eBay get up to 7.5% on all the sales and then another 3%-4% trough paypal. $1500 item that $150. Really sucks.

This is an interesting dilemma, isn't it?

I'm currently looking at a desirable item on Ebay UK where the seller is asking for a 3.4% surcharge if the buyer uses PayPal. However, the Buy It Now price is a good deal, even taking the surcharge into account. The item including shipping will be £105 ($183), so the surcharge will be £3.57 ($6.20).

I'm seriously tempted. If I point out to the seller that the surcharge is a violation, he probably won't like me for it, and (depending on personality) that may lead to a troublesome transaction. I can see that there is a matter of principle here, but I'm thinking that for the sake of £3.57 I may as well just pay the surcharge, keep the seller happy and still get myself a bargain.

Maybe I should buy the item, pay the surcharge, wait til the feedback is in, then find another item where this person is asking for the surcharge and report that to Ebay! :saeek:

Or just slam him in feedback and then report him to ebay... not that i suggest that. I would hate to have that happen to me as a seller. I think it's cool to do if you the person accepts the terms.

I got my 2001 LP Custom from ebay and the guy wanted an extra 3%. Given the price i got it for even after that it was still a steal. Still came in under $2000 new. I think it's up to the user. Just like with reserve prices if enough people dont bid on auctions with those terms the more people will stop doing it.
