EchoPlex gurus

Re: EchoPlex gurus

Ok, one of them is a late 70's EP-3 (NOT AN EP-8 LIKE THE TEXT SAYS...), which is solid state and the other is an EP-1 or EP-2 and is tube...FWIW, I have tried EP-1's, EP-2's, EP-3' and even an EP-4 and I BY FAR prefer the EP-3...the fact that they cost less money is just iceing on the cake!

As for the Aiwa Blackmore used, it wasn't a tape echo unit, it was a small reel to reel tape recorder that Richie modded to be an echo unit...

Also, I just saw that the price on the EP-3 is 4499.90...that is a misprint...it should be more like $449.90 and even that is a little high...

what ritchie used wasn't small- it was a full size 1/4" reel-to-reel. I can *clone* his echo sound from 'On Stage' with my Line 6, though.

Aha, a moded tape recorded, the man is genious what can I say ... do echoplexes mentioned here get close to that 76/78 circa RB tone? That's strange man, you like a SS better than tube? its still has the tape though right ?

To mention line* and Sir Ton Richie Blackmore in same sentence is a violation of International Geneva Tone Convention. :cussing:

Actually NOT a misprint if you can believe it... I called 'em!

Freakin' GuiTarget overpricing & ripping people off yet again. One of the stores around here has had a pair of Urei LA4 compressors sitting for like... at least five years plus at $3500 & they should be more like $1200-1500.

Some dolt paid too much for 'em on a trade in so they just sit there... "adding value to the store" as the manager told me face to face.

Another reason they don't get my business anymore.

There's lots of cool and some uncool tape echos out there. Roland Space Echos are pretty hip... General rule is to stay away from any 70s era Japenese 'home stereo equipment' stuff. They're usually nightmares...

Before I spent big bucks on an old Echoplex I'd consider the Fulltone tape echo. Get a "new" one that works!

LOTS of people like the SS plex's over the tube models...EVH, Eric Johnson, Jimmy Page and Brian May are just a few.

I have never really been interested in Blackmore's tone all that much so Ive never really listened to it enough to say if you can gte close with a plex...

Re: EchoPlex gurus

I am amazed that the price on that one is correct...thats just CRAZY!!! They also say it's an EP-8 so I wonder what in the world is really going on with them! FWIW, the Fulltone does NOT sounds like a plex...even though it's based on a plex they lost it to me. A decent EP-3 can be had for 1/2 to 1/3 the price of a Maestro Plex and to me the Maestro sounds better...

Crackheads man.

I've seen all kinds of crazy overpriced things in the GuiTargets around here... $1800 for an 80s ESP Strat, tagged higher; 5150 head at $1000; a pair of Neumann KM54 tube mics with no power supplys for $3000... normally they'd be around $2500 including the PSU's... Since they took 'em in without them there's no way to even test those mics!

Crackheads.

i bet you can get that sound with the new roland space echo pedal too. it just isn't so practical to gig with a tape machine anymore.

Re: EchoPlex gurus

yeah...but hard-core boutique pedal-philes are saying it sounds great.
one advantage to digital pedals (esp when it comes to delay) is longer delay times (I use these for loops) and (the essential part, for me) is that they will 'trail off' echos when you turn it off.
