EDS-1275 12-string side

Hi there!

My wife is absolutely stunning: our wedding day, about 2 years ago, gave me this fantastic '97 EDS-1275 in cherry red... yeah, I know, I'm a lucky guy! :)

Here comes my GAS... the 6 string side is not pure heaven (you know, Gibby 490 sounds a little muffled) but it's ok for now, the 12 string sound VERY muddy on the neck and quite a bit harsh/upper-middy on bridge...

Until then I'm looking for "the holy grail" paf sound for this baby...

Now it's your turn my friends: help me decide which HB can make my guitar sound like the JP EDS-1275 (The Songs Remains The Same, Stairway To Heaven, etc..)

Cheers!

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

59s would be your best bet IMO, gotta have A5 on the top of an EDS imo...

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

oilpit, I was thinking that an A5 in the neck spot will be a little bassy... do you agree?

I think it would be a lot better than a A2 neck, that would be really muddy. A5 is your best bet, but even so it's always tough to keep clarity in the neck of a 12 string...

Well, I think I'll give it a try: I'll take off the '59 from my LP and try it in the neck slot...

Thanks a lot!

Any other opinions my friends??

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

wait, wait, wait!!! you've got the 490r/t set on both sides right? they're actually decent PAF type pickups save for the magnet choice gibson has made(a2). they're great pickups, they just don't seem like it. enter magnet swaps-swapping the alnico 2 magnets for alnico 5 magnets makes for a great pickup, especially in the neck. i would describe it as similar to an SD '59, with a touch more output and mids. it cops a very good JP live type tone imo. if the stock bridge pickups are 498Ts however, then i'd say definitely go for a '59 in that position.

Yeah, I think they're both 490 (r/t combo)... I haven't heard the 490 with A5... Do you know where I can buy some A5 magnets? I got an A2 coming from a broken '57 i got years ago but I don't have any A5...

Thanks bro', cheers!

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

in that case, save some cash 'n' order four alnico 5 magnets from http://www.wymoreguitars.com, they're $5 each. if your order is over $50, you get free shipping, and if you enter sdforum for your coupon code, you get an additional 7% off of your entire order. i've ordered a ton of magnets from that shop:)

while you're there, i'd suggest getting some orange drop caps if you already haven't, they really clear up your tone control's sound depending on what value you get.

btw wymore ships internationally, just in case you were wondering.

Great job bro'!

I'll take a look just immediately!

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

Go with 59's all around...tweak the neck pickups in terms of height, keeping them fairly low will give you a slightly toppier sound and reduse the lows a little. Also, measure the pots wiht a meter...Im guessing you have 300k pots if so rip all of the out and put in 500k pots...this alone with give you more top end and sparkle/reduce mud...this coupled with new pickups will take the tone of the guitar up 2 or 3 notches.

aside from the '59 part, i agree with everything TGWIF just said:)

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

I'm in the same boat with my 92 EDS 1275. Been playing it for a couple years stock but I want to get more clarity out of it. I just put a Seth set into the 12 side & it sounds much better. I put a JB/Jazz in the 6 side but it's too hot. I'm going to try a Pearly set there or maybe another Seth. I'm also going to try swapping mags in the stock PU's just to see. I keep reading folks saying A2 mags are muddy but I seem to prefer A2 PU's & find them pretty clear. I love my Seth neck & Custom Custom in my LP after trying many different sets with A5 magnets. I also love the 57's in my SG which are A2.

FWIW my pots in the 1275 are 1M!!! They're Gibson pots & dated the same as the guitar so I guess they're stock. There's also a treble bleed mod on the Volume pots. I still might redo everything to 50's spec with 500k, we'll see.

Keep us posted with your results.

Cheers
Sean

Hi Sean, its not worth the try. There is only little difference between 500k and 1M in terms of sound. The 50 wiring only makes changes if you are fiddling with the knobs. Since I'm a everything-full-on guy i didnt see any differences. When i cut off the cap at neck tone knob, i had a little more clearness.

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

When I re-did mine I went with the 59B/JazzN combo. Seems to do pretty well. I also added tonpros bridges. Seems to help some. The JazzN is nice and clear and not muddy at all. I happen to thing it gets you to the Page doubleneck tones or close enough.

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

I always thought a set of Jazzes would be awesome for the 12 string side of an EDS. Or those anniversary A5 Seths...

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

The Jazz seems to work for me. Here's how I figure it. There's a LOT of wood on a doubleneck and setup properly a hell of a lot of sustain. Perhaps even too much. An A2 style pickup would be probably too mushy and not defined enough. An A5 puts in a little bit of brighness. I wanted something PAFish and though the 59 would be good in the bridge, but took a long time to figure out what should go in the neck. I decided on the Jazz, because of its clarity definition. Seems to work for me so far.

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

All right guys!
That's what's this forum is supposed to be!!! :yourock:

So let's sum up a little:

Neck Spot:
490 with A5, 59, Seth, Jazz

Bridge Spot:
490 with A5, 59, Seth, Jazz

Well, now all I need to do is to take my faithfull soldering machine and do some tests: I can try with 490 with A5 and 59s...

Let's do it!

Re: EDS-1275 12-string side

Jazz in the neck is an articulate pup choice! I have not used one in the bridge.

BTW, your wife knows how to treat a gtr playing guy!

Oh yeah bro', I've got it! :)

BTW: saturday night I went to see The Eagles live, here in Milan... Men, this "Hotel California" double neck silhouette was **** crazy... what a sound... It was exactly how I think it's a great 12 string sound should be... clear, full and ringing... Great playing too Mr. Stewart Smith!
Cheers to those old boys!
