Educate me on Bassman heads

Re: Educate me on Bassman heads

I agree with Birdy.

I jump between the channels to get a really nice grind/mix.

Sometimes, I also use a 1:2 pedal to select either one or two channels to work in those leads.

Re: Educate me on Bassman heads

Throw down a good AB/Y box and you got a champane 2 channel
on a beer income :bigok:

Re: Educate me on Bassman heads

Sorry, going slightly OT !

I am thinking of getting a Celtic Bassman copy, but would like to know what Bassman Head (curuit) has/had the most amout of grunt/chrunch (in Fender terms of course !)

Thanx guys !

Re: Educate me on Bassman heads

Well I'd say it's the 5F6A tweed bassman, but that was never avialable as head as a production Fender. The early Marshalls are basically a modified tweed bassman head though. Among the BF/SF bassmans the AB165 is probably the dirtiest.

There are several slightly different BF/SF designs and in some cases they might not have all been production amps:
6G6 BF type with tube recifier
6G6A SS rectifier version of 6G6
AA864 the classic BF
AB165
AA720 A CBS era version
AC568 another CBS amp.

There's probably more............

Re: Educate me on Bassman heads

I just got a 68, drip edge, the chassis is stamped 1967. I am in love with this amp, the bass channel is fat, lush and has a ton of beautiful grind. Simply stunned by how good this head sounds. Fat with great clarity. I have a Garnet head that sounds quite similiar as well. I wired my cab with a DPDT switch, so I can switch between 4 and 16 ohms for my various amps. Having a few cabs, I tried the amp at 4,8 and 16 ohm, for my tastes, the 4 ohm match really sits perfectly with the amp. I know some folks run them into 16 ohm, but the advice I was given was to not have that much of an ohm mismatch, with an amp built for 4 ohms. 8 ohm should not be an issue. Still an absurd bargain IMO. Hand wired amps with major mojo for 400.00 or so, the early Silver Face amps will likely be fetching a lot more in the coming years.

I also have a '68, and I agree! I use it with a a variety of gtrs, and run it through a sonic 2x12 closed back cab w/ Eminence Red Coat Pvt Jack spkrs. It always sounds great!
