This is a great example:

Listen to this and you'll get the answer to the question you were curious about but didn't have the heart to ask.

Enjoy!

Informative video indeed.

I might add that single coils are generally much more picky about pickup height. There's that small gap where you can adjust output, getting it too high makes them sound obnoxiously harsh, while too low will sound dull and lifeless,(a bit like what happened to burstbucker in the video.)

Interesting indeed. A good demonstration in the importance of getting pickup height right

Worse, too high and your tuning/intonation becomes a mess and your notes start to warble.

Re: Effect of different p'up heights

Seems like flat poles help a little bit with the warbling.

Re: Effect of different p'up heights

IMO it's one of those things best chosen with a screwdriver in hand and a fresh set of ears, rather than set measurements. Depending on the string action, neck relief and the pick attack in terms of how hard you pick. If you go too high, the side effects become obvious. Go too low and other side effects become obvious. Somewhere in the middle lies a sweet spot and it seems best to dial that in yourself based on your hands, and preferences. I generally like them a bit lower than other people and like the treble response to be even in terms of the 5 positions on the switch. Sometimes that means having a slightly lopsided neck or bridge pickup in relation to the other.

There's usually a setting I prefer for clean tones, and another that sounds good for gain.. and it's just a matter of what your main use for that guitar is.. for example, is it a blues guitar, or a high gain rock or metal guitar? It can really help to squeeze the last few drops of tone out of the pickups, rather than buying new ones. Adjustable pole pieces can also be fun to experiment with.

surprised no one talked about the honk JB has when the pickup height is wrong

Re: Effect of different p'up heights

Yeah some pickups seem to have a wide sweet spot, and others need to be dialled in really carefully.

Re: Effect of different p'up heights

also, the height of the pole pieces can affect the tone as well, lowering/raisng the pickup and raising/lowering the pole pieces can make a load of difference

That guy ALWAYS has some great vids. I love the ones showing the diffs between speakers. He plays the SAME RIFFS, no noodling with the knobs, no dicking around. Always good info from Johan.
