effects in the fx loop or not

hi

i would like to know if there are some effets that are better in the fx loop or not

chorus ?
flanger?
phaser?
univibe ?
bbe sonic stomp (it works for both position)

delay in the fx loop : ok
reverb : fx loop ok

i must add that i only use my clean channel : a specialist told me there were no problem to play all these effets in front of the amp
and my ears had to decide

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

I prefer modulation effects after the gain stages.

In fact, I prefer pretty much everything after the gain stages except a volume pedal.

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

Makes less difference when not using gain. A general rule otherwise is, "Do you want to distort the modulated sound or modulate the distorted sound?" I like phasers and flangers before the preamp and delay and reverb in the loop. When I use phasers and flangers in the loop, everything sounds more swooshy.

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

If you're only using the clean channel, putting all your effects in front of the amp is fine.

With my channel switching Mesas, I have my chorus and phasor in front of the amp. I keep my delays in the loop, along with a Boss PS-5 Pitch Shifter for harmony leads. I have a vibe pedal that I'm experimenting with and it may wind up in the loop as well...just to give it a little different feel than the chorus.

Experiment.

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

I like overdrive, wah, compressor (rare I use one though), octaver/pitch based in front, and delay, reverb, modulation, gates in fx loop. Really use fx sparingly though. Little reverb and delay on leads. Occasionaly flanger or phaser with dirt and chorus on cleans or sparingly on gain.

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

You don't find the modulation effects overly boosting the treble? That's been my experience, especially with chorus and flangers.

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

i must add something: i have a Marshall clean boost (very warm and loud but noisy)

now, i want to try a compressor-clean boost

so, my pedalboard will have : amp+ bbe sonic stomp+ compressor which is a clean boost too here! because i read it was for solo to have more volume

in the end, the other boost is just to add gain to the clean channel like an overdrive or to add gain to my distortion: different than the other boost in the beginning

so, 2 boosts
`but problem is

boost +distorsion+boost + comp

= 2 boots+1 comp= boring ...

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

i would like to know if

chorus
flanger and phaser or univibe will have a louder, bigger sound in the fx loop or not
or if these effects will have the same kind of sound AND WITH THEIR same VOLUME in the fx loop and in front of the amp

i talk about the clean channel
and a pedal for distortion

i talk about the volume vs clean channel /distortion pedal )) in fx loop or not

That hasn't been my general experience, but then I've only tried a few different flangers and chorus and it can depend on the amp too. I currently have the Electric Mistress (and not that impressed with it really - will be changed for separate MXR pedals) that has both in one pedal and doesn't make it sound boosted in treble. I don't find a whole lot of use for flangers though and chorus I like for clean channel stuff.

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

it's a boring work to appreciate the sounds, effects in and without fx loop

the only thing i noticed is that the delay MUST be in the fx loop
but i only use my pedals for gain :) so, i am on holidays :) lol

electric mistress? old or new one (green pedal)
i can add that my LIQUID CHORUS adds more volume (a little bit) but it is a good thing

My Electric Mistress is the silver one with blackface and purple edge trim where the first 1/3 of rate range is fixed rates and the rest is slow to fast rate. Its weird and kind of a pain to dial in for both fx at once. I want the yellow mxr chorus and the MXR EVH flanger, but since neither effect is used very little, not in a particular hurry for either.

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

Since the M13 allows you to put pedals in any order, I might work a bit more with these concepts of FX before the Distortions, but I'm pretty sure of the results I'll get again

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

My experience is that modulation effects sound better in the loop. If your going clean and using pedals for distortion, you want them after the distortion. You can do it the other way but, depending on the effect and manufacturer, it may not sound right and/or go crazy.

A slightly different, but related question, that I've gone through recently is to even use a loop or not. Depending on the amp, the loop can suck tone. Sometimes my amps just sound...right..without the loop. However, I think with most modern loops, as long as your pedals and cables are good, the loop will not suck tone too bad.

One example is that with my 5150III 50 watt I was liking it without the loop and noticed it lacked bass and aggressiveness without the loop. I started removing pedals from my loop and lo and behold one of them was really sucking tone. Without that pedal, the difference between loop and no loop is negligible.

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

Here's my feeling on it.

Compressor- best before amp because of noise considerations
OD/distortion- best before amp (although in my gig rack I occasionally use a post distortion but that's unusual, a special case)
Delay- best in the loop
Reverb- always best in the loop

Modulation effects- best in the loop for optimum fidelity and swirl BUT there's a certain feel to a flange, chorus or especially UniVibe before the amp getting distorted after the fact which the hi-fi sound of loop placement doesn't replicate. Old school; my ears like the sloppiness of it. So ideally I'd have distortions, chorus & a UniVibe in front of the amp, with flange, delay, and another chorus in the loop. Some of the coolest, wildest, most complex feedback tones I ever got came from using the 8-voice chorus in my Intellifex between guitar and amp. But it's far more detailed and three dimensional using modulations in the loop. If I had only one chorus it would best be placed there.

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

Whatever sounds best to your ears. Most folks will say that modulation, delay & reverb effects should be in the loop, but it really boils down to personal preference. Experiment with it and have some fun! :)

Re: effects in the fx loop or not

compressors, univibes and phasers before the dirt, chorus, flangers verb and delays after.
After writing that down i just realized that all the effects that i would put after dirt all have a time based element to them. Perhaps that is why they sound best there.
