A delay where you can set the mod rate/depth and EQ the echoes is ideal. I've been using the DL4 mkII lately. It is a little big for a small board, though. If I was doing a tiny board, I think I'd just use a Flashback.
They can be very dark. It's a nice sound sometimes, and I could see how it might work really well for certain uses . . . but I sometimes want brighter delays.
Raging thick pickup in a Les Paul with heavy distortion, not so much.
Had a friend who got a CC because some Strat playing geezer told him to. I said get a DD3 - because I know what he plays. A month later friend says 'Yeah, I got rid of the CC, it was too dark' and he had a DD3T

The Vapor Trail Deluxe is probably all I'd need, but I don't have personal experience with it. I love the sound of the regular Vapor Trail, but it has presets. I need at least 1 long delay and 1 slapback.
