Effects Pedal Order

Are there any particular rules of thumb for putting Effects Pedals in a certain order? I have a Tube Screamer, Metal Zone, Flanger, Chorus, Digital Delay, Volume Pedal and a Wah Wah....I am also considering getting an EQ also... If anyone who is knowledgable on this could tell me the order in which I should run these...I would appreciate it. Thanks

Re: Effects Pedal Order

only u can decide the best order for you, but what i remember being told is:

wah wahs
compression/sustainor
flange, chorus, delay types
distortion/overdrive
eq
reverb?
volume pedal

experiment around, you will come up with something cool. fx order is always changing, see what works for you, i run wah than compresion than driver, when im using fx....

Re: Effects Pedal Order

I would probably go W>TS>MZ>EQ>F>C>V>DD. I've never used an EQ, just guessing there. There is no rule though, not really. Play around and find out what you like. JMO,YMMV.

Uh not exactly... close but ..

The general rule is :
Compressor - Dist/OD - EQ - Modulation - Delay - Reverb

Some like their wah just before Dist/OD, some other prefer just after. As for the volume pedal, you can use it anywhere you want, but preferably before the Delay to avoid cutting the effect. And we haven't talked about Efx Loop yet...

Re: Effects Pedal Order

I agree with Thames. If he likes 2112, how can he be wrong? :)

My chain looks like:

Tube Screamer (leads) > Tube Screamer (Rythm) > Chorus > Digital Delay.

that is a really good article, and yea, my order was way off, it was just a shot not looking at my pedals or anythiing, i always switch up my own pedals all the time

Re: Effects Pedal Order

Thanks for all the input and great article fresh start.....I appreciate it. I basically had my setup right except for the Wah Wah which I had right after my volume pedal....I had them set up in the order which I had listed except for the delay pedal was last.....tube screamer, metal zone, flanger, chorus, morley volume, crybaby and delay. I will put the wah wah first now and I should be pretty close. Thanks again

Re: Effects Pedal Order

Each to his own, but I find it best to keep your timed-based effects such as a delay in the effects loop, if you have one. Correct me if I'm wrong but by doing this you're connecting that effect in between the pre and power stages of your amp. That way if you're using the distortion channel of your amp the effect wont be affected from the signal of your preamp. The signal from the effect will come thru nice and clear as opposed to plugging it directley in the amps input jack.

Re: Effects Pedal Order

2112 and Temples of Syrinx (correct my spelling) could have been the best song I have ever seen live. I saw Rush twice and they opened with this song medley both times. I think Rush was the 70's and 80's version of Cream in terms of being a great star studded power trio. Lifeson, Lee and Peart Rock! Another great band from Canada is Tragically Hip.

Re: Effects Pedal Order

IMO its best for a Wah to be first in the chain or at least before dist/od because if you put the wah after the dist its the dist that is being "wahed" and theres alot more overtones present then and i find that it looses definition and attack and general tone..

Re: Effects Pedal Order

Thames has the general rule nailed. Having said that, the best thing to do is try different combos to see how you like it. If it sounds good to you, then that's the right order.

Personally, I go with the general rule, except I like my 'Vibe before my OD/Distortion instead of after. I do insist on delay at the end though :D

Re: Effects Pedal Order

Must agree that experimentation is necessary however as a general rule of thumb the effect that you are using most prominently for a song or set should be first in the chain.
