Effects shopping today.. need some suggestions

Hey guys,

After selling my taylor, i have the money to get back into electric playing (fell into some hard times) and its time now to so some effects shopping. I've got about $200-$300 to spend today. Im going to a couple shops including one that specializes in some obscure finds.

Im looking for the following:

-A good solid delay, i was thinking giga-delay but im open for suggestions. I need something deep and versatile.
-A compression pedal like a CS-2 but im really only looking for the on tap high compression side of it, its only in use for 2-3 intervals in some of my songs. dont really need a sustain boost. I have a keeley ds-1 for gain boosts
-A volume pedal, this can be cheap like ernie ball or cheaper.

These are my main concerns at the moment. The delay is probably the one i wany most in quality. the compression and volume pedal are more for the practicality.

Suggestions? Brands?

Im trying to splurge here so any ideas would be great!

a comp is probably the last pedal I'd get, but I would jump on one of the Teese's at Musictoyz before they're gone. I haven't used one, but I trust his rep. either that, or a regular Dynacomp.

Re: Effects shopping today.. need some suggestions

Your comp is definitely the dynacomp. I do dig the CS-2 though...

As for delay, what do you mean by deep? Programmable, extra long lengths, modulation? Need more info. DD-3 really met the needs of most i've ever met. AD-9 if it's analog you crave. I'm a simple creature in this area.

Re: Effects shopping today.. need some suggestions

Yeah, i am looking for an analog if possible. "deep" meaning long hold times and good ambiance.

As far as compression, i actually use the pedal as an effect to make the sound extremely dull for a few seconds then turn it off for "HEY! here i am" kind of deal.. so basically i "compress" all sounds to a lo-fedelity EQ level without using an eq pedal (cause most are noisy)

for delay, check out the Line6 DL4, digital, but can be made to sound identical to analog, with a lot more options.

How about one of those Ibanez LO_FI pedals. I've never tried one but it sounds like it will do what youy looking to do.

Hey guys, these are the results of the escapade..

Welp, went to the shop and stayed for a while trying most everything they had. I LOVED the maxon ad-9. but at $219 it was a little dry and not versatile. I then tried an mxr analog delay. It was good but not useful for what i was looking for. The line 6, like the pod, was too complex.

Then i moved on to the compressor. They had a CS-3 which i actually loved and did exactally what i wanted, so i kept it aside, then i asked for the cheapest volume pedal they had and an ernie ball volume pedal. the cheap one they brought out was a morley little aligator. i LOVED it. had the minmum volume knob that while not as good sounding as the compressor, was a great sub for the same effect.

So i ended up with

-Boss DD-5 Digital Delay
-Morley Little Alagator

I'm planning on going back when the amp comes in so i know exactly what i want.

--------------------------

I also tried a few other obscure effects for the hell of it

Electro Harmonix Frequency Analyzer- Wow. obscure to say the least, heh, wouldn't take it home but i do like to play with it

Boss HR-2 Harmonist- a cool little pedal if you give it the time to play with

Boss OC-2 Octave- Again, cool. really would use it more for inspiration in the studio

Carl Martin Red Repeater- Not obscure but kind of cool. Kind of bland honestly, too subtle of an echo

Usually this store has a lot more obscure effects and rare finds, but i'll give them a break since they just moved to a new location :27:

Im thinking of going back for the AD-9!

Re: Effects shopping today.. need some suggestions

I'd probably just get the boss me 50 for that. The delay built in is suppose to be like the dd6 boss and then there are enough decent modulation effects. The volume pedal works too.

Re: Effects shopping today.. need some suggestions

The best volume pedal I've ever used is the Visual Volume. Smooth response, tuner out, and LED's to show you WHERE the pedal is set.

Re: Effects shopping today.. need some suggestions

I don't use effects much, but find that a quality volume pedal - used properly can do wonders. This is in part due to my use of a Rivera M60 amp - which can do massive variations in output, as well as timbre etc., but also due to the use of a "Jimmy Page wired" Gibson Les Paul Special - which can have radical output changes from setting to setting. The Riveras have a loop which can put a pedal into the circuit after the power amp, and makes the overall mix work seamlessly. You'd be amazed at the things even the simplist rig can do with a volume pedal. Sorry for the monologue, Morley makes the pedal of choice.

Re: Effects shopping today.. need some suggestions

I was fairly suprised with the morley. Honestly i would never look at one otherwise but plugged it in and the ernie ball was knocked out. Not as smooth but deffinitely had a better tonal response.

Still waiting for that Tremoverb to arrive. That will be the true test. I did take my main guitar and plugged through a nomad (closest amp they had to the tremoverb) sounded outstanding there.

All else fails they have a 30 day buy back policy

As far as the delay, im happy with it. Its got a lot better reverse and response time than the dd-6. The fact that you can't switch between modes with out a pause is a little downer but its nothing getting a second delay in the chain won't fix. Bare in mind also that the amp has built in reverb that might come in useful as a delay substitue at times.

Re: Effects shopping today.. need some suggestions

T Rex delay is the best "small pedal" delay I've ever encountered. It's VERY clean / transparent and is tap-programmable for speed OR can be left on top of the amp and midi ft swthble via mdi controller.
Amazing pedal!!
