effects?

What effects do you guys use and what do you use them for.

I might be buying a new amp tomorrow and, Lord willing, I might have a couple hundred extra to buy some extra stuff.
Right now I only really use my Line 6 DL4, and (if I have the batteries, I'll use my wah wah)

Re: effects?

I've got the line6 reverb, for you guessed it reverb effects. I own a dunlop 95q crybaby for wah effects, a digitech whammy which is cool for dive bombs and tremelo fx with an LP, and a boss octave pedal the brown one that does one and 2 octaves below which sounds pretty evil with the right riff.

I'm not much of an fx guy and until about a yr ago, I didn't own any pedals other than my wah. I wanna get a tubescreamer, a good flange, chorus and delay and I think I'll be pretty much set with those in my aresenal.

Re: effects?

535Q Dunlop Crybaby - It makes my guitar make the best sounding waaahwaaaawaaaaaooooowww I've ever heard.

Fulltone OCD - Give me crazy-good overdrive and a good lead boost.

Boss DD20 Gigadelay - Gives me 4 great delay presets (short, long, mod delay, and Cathedral)

Line 6 DL4 - Gives me four modulation sounds, out of the 16 or so it's got available on it. I currently have it set for a Slow Jet Flanger sound, a Classic Chorus sound, a good Have A Cigar Type phaser and a ring modulator setting to make video game noises. :D

I'd really like a TC Electronics G-System to simplify things.

Re: effects?

if I had to build my pedalboard up from the beginning (not including overdrive/distortion) I would first start with a phase pedal such as a phase 90 or small stone. Then I would get a WAH, then chorus, then reverb, then delay... etc... so basicly I think the 2 most important effects (after overdrive) would be phaser and Wah.

Re: effects?

that Line 6 modulator sounds like it'd be an awesome piece of gear. I'd love it for recording specifically...getting all those weird background noises.

Re: effects?

Here's my stuff, and it's grown by a few since then (Skreddys, Lava Box, Boss fuzz and a Morely Wah)

The strange thing is that I'm just as likely to plug straight in as use a chain of pedals, it all depends on what I'm doing. For pure blues rock, only a little delay, but for more experiemental instrumental stuff I can stack any number of delays, phasers, flangers, tremolos, etc. My top three types of pedals that are likely to be plugged in are fuzz, phaser and analog or analog modelling delay.

Re: effects?

I just use a G-Major, the time based effects (verb & delay) are great, which is all I generally use. The chorus and detune sound really nice, the phaser and flanger would sound a little more dramatic going into the front end of the amp, but they are nothing to complain about....all for about the cost of two expensive pedals and the whole rig is MIDI switched.

...and a Morley Bad Horsie II

Re: effects?

i use the ME-50. i use it for distortion on the loud setting while my amp is on clean. i use the noise suppressor. i use the tuner. i use the pitch shifter. i use the modulation effect and hall. i use delay. i use chorus 1. i use other stuff too, i can't remamber though.

Re: effects?

I heard the Phaser 90 is great for a boost in solos. A friend of mine has it and when turned all the way down it adds a nice little "push over the edge" :)

Re: effects?

I've slowly been cutting as many pedals as I can out of what I use . . . down from 11 pedals to the following:

Wah->Phaser->Compressor->Overdrive->Delay->Delay

Really, you just have to find what works for the music that you play . . .

I know what compression is in terms of audio recording but what does the guitar effect do? I heard something about it changing the dynamics.

Re: effects?

i have a custom built Carl Martin which is kind of a Plexi-tone/AC-Tone and a Rocktron Tsunami for Chorus and delay, but the chorus on it bites so i only use the delay and i LOVE that delay!

i use the cranked sound on the Plexi side and the slightly overdriven on the AC side along with just a pinch of the delay (thickens it up nicely) for nearly all my overdriven sounds!

i use a slightly larger dose of the delay for my clean stuff with the AC side on clean for fingerpicking and whatnot.

i would like to try a bad monkey or similar one of these days and wah and a good chorus.

It does the same thing it does in audio recording. Quiet stuff gets louder, loud stuff gets quieter.

As far as effects, I say you can't have enough. I'm running what I consider to be a very sparse setup:

Dunlop Crybaby
Boss DS-1
Digitech DigiDelay
Duncan Tweak Fuzz
Arion Tubulator
Korg AX100G
Behringer V-Amp2

All of the pedals have been modded at least a little bit by me.

As far as what I use them for, I usually use a straight up clean or slightly crunchy Vox or Matchless setting on the V-Amp2, the DS-1 is turned on all the time with varying shades of drive, and I'll add the Tubulator or Tweak Fuzz for heavier tones. I also add liberal doses of phase, auto wah, ring mod, or whatever from the Korg, and I love using the Digitech delay for soundscapey stuff.

A compressor acts like a guy sitting on the volume control of your guitar. When you play loud, it will limit the amount of volume that you get . . . when you play quietly it brings your volume up a bit. There are a bunch of different ways to use compression for guitar . . .

I like to use some compression when playing clean so that I can go from playing chords to single note lines without a drop in volume. It's also good for fast funk strumming (it gives a more controlled and even sound than you can get otherwise). Lately I've been messing with compression into overdrive to get a smooth, even lead sound (I just use the overdrive alone for rhythm).

Re: effects?

My style is sort of rooted in early 80's new wave & pop-rock like The Police, The Pretenders, U2, etc. So, here's my setup

Boss CE-2 (light chorus)
Boss BF-2 (heavy chorus-type sound, seldom used for big swoosh sounds), TR-2 (I love tremolo, but play a Marshall, hence the pedal)

Two Rocktron Short Timer delays (one for slapback, one for longer rhythmic delays)

I'm still trying to get an OD/distortion I like; presently trying out both the Boss SD-1 and a Keeley-modded DS-1.

If I had room on my board, I'd add a phaser. I have a Crybaby, but seldom use it.

Re: effects?

just a wah (no more than 2 songs per night) and the amps reverb

i am still working on the basic tones from my 4-ch amp ... after i get them all nailed down, i will see about getting my rocktron intellifex in the loop for delays and choruses as needed

Re: effects?

A wah, a *little* bit of reverb from the amp, and I've been playing with having an overdrive "always on" sitting on top of the amp while using the volume on my guitar to "clean up". Last week I messed with a DS-1, this week I'm messing with the Wylde Overdrive. I like the Wylde OD better so far.

I used to run chorus, flanger, phaser and a delay, but I'm not a tap dancer. ;) I'm more comfortable with less.

Re: effects?

Heh, too many. I'm an effects junkie. Some of them are almost whole new instruments in themselves. I plan on putting an effects loop into my Marshall and adding something like a Kaoss pad for some really wild stuff, sampling, and resampling, to do stuff that stompboxes just can't do.
