Egnater

Hey guys. I was wondering on your opinions about some egnater amps. I was considering getting either the rebel 30 or waiting for the tweaker 40 to come out. I play rock, jazz, blues, folk, and fusion. I have both humbucker and singlecoil guitars. Which is more versitle and which sounds better? Thanks!

Re: Egnater

Welcome aboard!

I've been using the Rebel 20 since Nov 2008 and have considered many times getting a two-channel amp, but I came to the realization that I prefer to set up a good clean sound and use pedals/pickup switching to get different tones. I use the amp with a guitar that has a set of P-Rails in it and the amp works great. I tend to play blues and rock variations, some heavy sounding stuff as well. If I absolutely had to change the amp I would seriously consider the Rebel 30, the Renegade, or the Tweaker line. Every time I get into thinking about it and doing some research I come back to the conclusion that the Reb 20 is doing just fine.

The Tweakers have a bit more going on in voicing options than the Rebels (switches, etc.) The Rebel 30 advantage is two channels, on-board reverb, silent recording out. Both amps offer tube variations, with the difference being that you can actually put different tubes in the Tweaker whereas the Rebel has a knob to blend between 6v6 & el84 (haven't heard if you can change power tube types without mods on the Rebel).

Just my two cents about my Egnater experience.

Re: Egnater

I've had the Tweaker for about a month and am just now finding some time to play with it. I'm really impressed and am very happy I got it. 100% quality.
I've not yet put it through a full jam but hope to soon. If you're interested, play one before you buy to make sure it's for you.

Re: Egnater

Rebel 30 since middle of last year and totally dig it.

Maybe it's just me, but I find these smaller amps tend to sound better into 212s as opposed to the 112s they're typically hooked up to at music stores.

Re: Egnater

I just gave my tweaker a go up to about half way on the master......yep I'd certainly want to have a few other instruments about. Its pretty goddamn loud. Also my speaker isn't yet broken in so its pretty harsh too. The problem is that you need to have more time at that volume to break it in.

I'd go a 2x12 myself. There's one that was posted a couple of weeks back with side ports. Gave a half open/half closed back tone.

edit - this is the cab I was thinking of

Re: Egnater

Get the Rebel 30.

I had a Tweaker and it was a great amp. But I've also played the Rebel 30 1X12 cube and the Renegade 65 head and thought that both amps were superior for a band/gig situation. More grunt there. I also love the blend/mix option for tubes on each channel.

I'm definitely into sealed-back 2X12s and 4X12s. But I gotta say, that little Rebel 30 1X12 combo is BIG and FAT sounding. It really impressed me and I think that it's a top choice for an amp that one needs to be both portable and loud enough to play with a band. I'm more than happy with my Bogner, Eleven Rack, and Traynor rigs... but if I was to add just one more... it would VERY likely be the Rebel 30 combo.

Re: Egnater

I've played a Renegade and thoroughly enjoyed myself. :) Having said that, the Egnaters are definately worth considering.

Re: Egnater

I only like rock and hard rock so I am mainly considering the orange tiny terror 1x10 combo, weighs 32 lbs

Id consider other lightweight amps like the tweakers if I wanted diff preamps and more tweakage tho

Re: Egnater

I've got a tweaker but it's hard to say if it would be better than the Rebel 30. I mean, my few (and minor) beefs with the tweaker aren't with the preamp, they're with the power amp. Stuff like mellow-ish bass as a result of cathode bias. That wouldn't be a problem with the fixed bias, 6L6 tweaker 40.

The rebel series has more of a 'boutique' kinda response, IMO. A little more modern, hifi, compressed sorta thing. The tweaker is more vintage, a lil rougher around the edges, and with less compression. Maybe it's just less gain overall, it's been while since I played the rebel 20 or 30.

So focusing on just the basic tone of the amps, I'd say, go for the tweaker 40 when it hits, as the greater dynamics will suit stuff like jazz and blues better, while both amps have plenty of gain and power for rock.

Re: Egnater

Some examples of the Rebel 20 being used in a small setting (drums, bass, guitar) without aid of PA or microphone:

In this next one there was another guitar player using a Fender Blues Deluxe (I think...15 watt tweed reissue of some kind) and Line6 M13:

Re: Egnater

Hey sanford does that guitar have p-rails installed? I think i recall you on some forms about p-rails. If so, how does egnater work with those pickups?

Re: Egnater

RDog, yeah it's an Epiphone Sheraton II with P-Rails. I use an on-on-on mini-toggle for each pickup to get rail/parallel/P-90. Works fine with the Rebel 20. I get a variety of tones from the guitar + whatever effects pedals I'm using while setting the amp for a full, clean, and evenly spread EQ type of sound. I generally don't use the tight & bright switches, instead I use the guitar tone knobs and pickup positions to get varying degrees of bassy vs. trebley tones.

Re: Egnater

So the guy at my local GC said they already have the tweaker 40/88 and are shipping out this month. I thought they weren't coming out till late summer?

Re: Egnater

Only thing I can offer is:
A) welcome to the forum

B) I really like the tweaker! So much that I prolly wont try the 40 watt for fear of wanting one.. :banghead:
