Egnator tweaker 40

So I have an Orange Tiny Terror I'm considering selling to buy a tweaker I played the other day. It has two channels and an fx loop which my terror lacks. The biggest problem is being able to get a good lead boost from the terror and the single tone knob can lack some definition control.

I like the tweaker's eq switches and the ability to set each channel similar but have one louder for solos.

I like the orange alot as is, but it isn't making me happy in the mix with my band. I'm a little hesitant to get rid of the orange but the tweaker is tempting. I don't have the budget to keep both or I would.

Opinions?

Why not?

The Tweaker 40 is terrific and I want one so bad I'm gonna have an aneurism or something.
Having two channels of whatever the **** you want is just awesome.

Re: Egnator tweaker 40

If you use the current MF or GC coupon offers, you can knock the prices down a bit.

My money would probably drop on the H&K TubeMeister 36 out of all of them.

I've heard most of the lunchbox amps, and the 36 does it all, and has headroom that the others run out of.

The higher powered Tweakers aren't bad options, but they're a bit tubby and loose sounding compared to H&K and Orange.

Re: Egnator tweaker 40

The Tweaker would be my choice hands down of the two amps you mention. But my money would go to the Tubemeister 36 as Joe suggested. Not only incredible tone with lots of headroom and lots of options, but it is just sooo dang cool looking as well.

Re: Egnator tweaker 40

I bought a Tweaker 15, no regrets. I had a Mercury Magnetics OT installed, the thing sounds phenomenal for the price. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't think highly of it. The H&K looks and sounds like garbage... too buzzy, and cheap sounding. The Orange TT is OK, but boxy sounding, and the Brit mode on the Tweaker is an Orange style tone (more low mids). The Egnater blows the H&K out of the water, and it doesn't look like a gimmicky toy. But it takes a while to learn the amp (tweaker) and hence dial it in. My only gripe after owning it for over a year is that the tolex job is shoddy. The Tweaker 40 head would be even better, having 2 channels available.

Just goes to show how subjective tone and appearance are. One man's "too buzzy and cheap sounding" is another's "incredible tone with lots of headroom". One man's "looks...like garbage", is another's "sooo dang cool looking".

Indeed! I love my TubeMeister 18. Ironically, I run mine in stereo with an Egnator Rebel 20 and they play well together. I bet a TM-36 and a Tweaker 40 would make a roaring couple as well. If I was going to choose only one, I might actually prefer the Egnator because it is easier to dial in, FWIW.

Both good options.

Re: Egnator tweaker 40

To each their own, but the H&K seems to have a really harsh high-end. The Egnater is definitely the opposite with a ballsier, smoother tone, but has a bright switch if you want more highs. And as far headroom, I get more than enough headroom on my Tweaker 15. That's how I have it set all the time for a pedal platform. The distortion on it is great, but I have some really nice distortion pedals, and since I don't have 2 channels to work with I just leave it clean. When I boost with my GT-500, there's a noticeable several dB jump in volume without overdriving the amp.

On the Tweaker, you just set the gain switch to clean and turn the gain waaaaaaaaay down and crank the volume. The gain knob alone will get you from a brighter sound at really low settings to a fatter tone with just the turn of the knob because it's sort of a high-pass filter when the gain is set low. As you turn up the gain more mids and bass get through.

Yup. I played the rebel20 , T15,. and whatever that $1000 ish dollar combo is called, before I got my TM18, and I dont get the love for egnater at all. Two dimensional and bland would b emy descriptors.

I didn't like the Rebel either, for what it's worth.

Re: Egnator tweaker 40

If you're gonna get an egnater I hope you save up some cash for the inevitable output transformer it'll need. They are notoriously junky amps.

Re: Egnator tweaker 40

My friends Tweaker 40 just died only a couple months old, the power transformer died... I guess its a known problem so just a heads up. Supposedly the replacement transformers have been fixed, he is waiting to get his repaired. Personally the amp is ok, I'm not crazy about the tone!
