EHx Deluxe Memory Man

Anyone have experience with this pedal? Is there a better analog delay for the same amount of money?

Re: EHx Deluxe Memory Man

Dunno about better...but it is a unit that has very little headroom, throw in alot of signal and it will choke on you.
Dig up a Maxon instead, they are way better in quality and have 900ms delay.
I have one Memoryman now as a reference unit, I do not like it much really, too crappy build, the delays chirps and sound funny when you bend a note.
The 24 volts powersupply is a pain in the a$$...hehe

The Memory manb is one of my favorite delays ever, but It has a "tone" of it's own...Rid is right, in truth it's an old design and some people do not like it...I do, it's all up to you. I will tell you this...IMO the re-issue is jusrt as good as the originals. Good luck.

BTW...if you just want delay, MXR used to make an analog delay...it was ac powered, and was simply called "Analog Delay"...they bring a pretty good chunk of money, and there is no reissue...but that is a great pedal!

There was a time (about 30 years ago) when ElectroHarmonix was a cutting edge of sorts as far as effects go, but as far as I can tell, the MemoryMan is still just that, a 30 year old effect. If you're looking for a decent delay pedal, you might look at something by BOSS or Digitech's DigiDelay. They're not overly expensive and to me, sound much more natural.

Re: EHx Deluxe Memory Man

IMO, check out Akai's E1 Headrush pedal. You should be able to find a mint one for about the same as the Memory Man, if not cheaper.

It's got some great features, and a delay to die for, as well as 'tape loop' simulation.

If you find one, try it out!

Re: EHx Deluxe Memory Man

By the way, the best analog delays that I've EVER heard were the Roland tape echos. Namely the 501 and 301. They're not pedals per se, but if you can find one in good condition, now THAT's an echo unit!

Re: EHx Deluxe Memory Man

I have an old MM, and it's nice but noisy. It also sucks tone unless you use a buffered pedal in front of it (e.g., Boss TU-2). I recently bought a SIB Mr Echo, which sells for $125 or less, and is very nice with true-bypass. It is digital but has a very analog sound with a bout a half sec. max delay time.

According to the guy EHX called in to work on the Memory Man in 76, Howard Davis, the reissue DMM is far superior to the original.

Stay right clear of the MXR analog delay. The BBD chips in them are prone to burning out and you just can't find ones to replace them with.

The Ibanez DE-7 has an Echo sim mode on it and to be honest is far better than half the analog delays made.

The 301 space echo is nice, the 501 isn't. However tape echos are much more hifi than grungey, dark BBD based pedals.
