EHX Magnum 44: an amp in a pedal as a backup amp! Anyone try one?

In the next year I am prolly gonna get an EHX Magnum 44: an amp in a pedal, cause I plan to sell of my Marshall JCM 900 4500 that was serving as a backup and was not fun to cart around. Any experience with the EHX Magnum 44? I am a Murphy's law type of guy and rarely ever gig without a backup; I have seen amps get fried many times...Do you know of any other pedal amps? Is the crate powerblock really worth it, being that it is bigger than a pedal? Any feedback or insights at all are appreciated, thank you :)

That coupled with a preamp pedal like an AMT legend series pedal would make a killer, ultra-portable backup rig in case the t00bz go bust.

One of the Tech 21 character series would be great. Get the one closest to your amp and you're set. An excellent backup plan, should things go wrong on gig night.

+ 1

That, or a tube OD pedal, or one of those little two channel tube preamps you can get from Presonus or whoever.

ok cool thanks :) any additional comments at all are appreciated of course :)

I betta get a mag44 and pack my tech 21 oxford with it to gigs,

based on your comments of emulating tube tone pedal types, I do not think my rat pedal on my effects board would be good enough to mimic for the desired effect. cheers :beerchug:

We have a forum bro whose name escapes me who gigs a LOT with one of those and an AMT.

He was having serious back problems if I recall correctly, and was forced to do this for his health, but ended up loving the sound.

44 seems overkill - didn't they make a lower wattage one? but if they're roughly the same price, might as well go louder. :cool2:

Man is here :)

It's simple as a wooden cube and I think it was much more consistent sounding than any of my tube heads. Be sure that you pair it with a 8 or 16 ohms cab. 4 ohms (probably) doesn't do any damage though, but as it's a Class D circuit, without proper load it will stutter.

ImmortalSix is right, a 44Magnum and an AMT M1 was my main rig during our winter tour last year. I can only recommend it. After about the 3rd show and some tweaking I started to see the change as improvement, not as a compromise. I had a lot of positive feedback, too. Both engineers and audience loved it, not to mention my spine that is symptom free most of the time by now. I recorded some tracks with this micro rig recently, if you like I may post some of them here. With some fellow AMT users we also plan to do an AMT P1 vs P2 vs 6505 youtube test some time and you'll never guess the power amp :)

Since that I sold all my tube heads, partly because I had some great people around who had good use of them, partly because after all those years together I was dying to see them eating dust. Bad spine or not, these were made to play music and not to rest in a box.

Let me add this, I want to run one of these with a bogner pedal in stereo with my orange dark terror for my brutal tones......would this be gnarly or what????

thanks rjudo and everyone; NecroPolo, thanks for your insights, I really want to hear your EHX 44magnum clips, your music is really awesome for sure so I figured the audience would be stoked no matter what ;)

I always take along a Crate Power Block (150 SS watts) + a Digitech RP355. Very small, compact and w/ lots of volume and versatile sounds (courtesy of the RP355). I use a coupler (1/4" female to 1/4" female) and a speaker cable when I'm backing up a combo. Tried it out at home several times and it sounds very decent. Fortunately, never had to call on it yet for backup. It stays in the car just in case. It's not a tube amp sound, but for emergencies, not bad.

I bought the Crate PB when they were discontinued for $99. Today used ones are going for more than that.
