EHX Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff

Re: EHX Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff

Wish they could shrink the footprint of that, as it is it takes up a lot of pedalboard real estate....

Re: EHX Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff

That’s bo-nan-as!

The mids are semi-parametric. Except for that Hi/Low Q Switch. Does that technically make it parametric?

I’m still kookoo for Cocoa Puffs.

Re: EHX Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff

I'm assuming the mid-freq knob is a sweep/contour, and that the mids-level is a cut/boost,,,,,,, just like a metal zone. (?)

Re: EHX Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff

With two Q settings on that switch instead of a knob for sweeping.

Re: EHX Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff

It has one knob more than the Deluxe Big Muff : the BLEND knob. What is that ? Can you bland in dry sound (for bassplayers) ?

And the left toggle on the deluxe was a bass boost to give you russian muff. Now it is called Wicker. Is it the same thing ?

It's the "wicker" circuit found in Tone Wicker version of Big Muff. Adds extra distortion circuit.

I think (from the name) that it's Russian Muff with extra control for low end and expanded mid controls + the wicker circuit. Where as Deluxe Big Muff is based on NYC Big Muff and just adds extra circuit for "russian muff" type of tones.

The base circuit is the civil war (which is where the styling comes from), which is the same as the green Russian tall font (not bubble font) and the recent green reissue.

Wicker is basically a mod where it bypass capacitors in the first transistor stage allowing more highs through, it worked well on the big muff with tone wicker where you had the tone lower for more bass and needed a bit more highs, also cool for darker amps. Overall I think this could be an awesome pedal, the cival war tone everyone loves plus cool mods, a real contender against all the boutique stuff and hopefully widely available. EHX are reallly at the top of their game currently. Now they just need a triangle muff with a built in LBP, a tone bypass and a mids section.....

Re: EHX Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff

Thanks for your answers and input.

I like the "bass boost" opton on the regular EHX Big Muff Deluxe. The Sovtek sounds interesting.

Recently I tried an old Big Muff (the third version) that the owner of the pratise room leaves there... I compared it side by side with my EHX Deluxe Big Muff and if you put the three knobs at noon on both they were very different. I read about this but still I was surprised. The new one (the first Deluxe) was quite louder and more aggressive while the old was sweeter and "vintage" (sorry it sounds obvious :) )

So is there a bif difference between the first three versions (triangle - Ram's Head - 3rd one) ?

I also tried to dial a similar sound to the old Muff on a Ibanez modified clone (orange "Overdrive 1974"). The japanese stomp was much more trebly : I had to set the tone down to 7 o'clock !

There are numerous differences between different muff versions.

Here's huge resource on all old versions of the Muff: http://www.kitrae.net/music/music_big_muff.html

Re: EHX Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff

I just found a guy in Russia who had some NOS OEM original Soviet parts for the Russian Big Muffs.

EHX doesn't sell most of the parts or have them anymore

My Big muffs look like new in places now inside and out now -good thing -I wore the **** out of them in the 80s and 90s

What I've read about the subject, many more learned seem to say the BIg Muff tone really just comes from the circuit design and component values.

Actually, there's not much doubt about that -but to my surprise these pedals go for 500-800.00 now.!!!! So I need to keep them ALL original -especially the jacks, knobs, and LED with the square hosing.
