EL 84 question.

Re: EL 84 question.

Same answer I just gave 75lespaul to his question on tube grading-

Two of the best resources on the web for tube reviews are:

Tube Depot
and
Watford Valves
Lots o' reading material here, covering new production as well as NOS varieties. Have at it.

Edit: Added links.

Re: EL 84 question.

If you can find them, while they are still affordable, the Polam Telam EL84 has the warmest fattest 84 sound I have ever heard. I have no issue with many new brands of tubes, but these guys have no equal. Simply floored by them. They are sturdy too, get em and wonder why anybody would bother with anything else.

Re: EL 84 question.

Thanks, guys. I've never heard of the Telams that Kevlar mentioned. Time to do a bit of homework!

Re: EL 84 question.

As for as modern production goes, nothing touches JJs.

Kevin's got my interest though, Telams sound like something I should check out ;)

Re: EL 84 question.

EH's and Sovtek's are usually fairly bright. JJ's are pretty much darker on everything across the board.

I usually put JJ's in my EL84 amps. They add a bit of a bluesy flavor.

So, JJ's +1 or +2 or....

Re: EL 84 question.

JJ's
Check out Mr eurotubes.com, he's a JJ guy. watford are the finest UK source/opinion. I have a pair of Electro-Harmonix EL84s in my H&K and it's not bad, but fairly bright and harshish on overdrive. But clean, not bad. Next set going in is a set of JJ EL84S's
