6L6's are more HiFi, and offer higher headroom as well. EL84's sound smaller, and have more a easily reached/compact distorted tone.
The Mesa F30, for example, sounds really nice, and has two EL84's in the power amp section...but EL84's produce only 11 Watts each of Class A/B power.
6L6's are generally better for about 22 Watts each, Class A/B power, and there are more "flavors" of output tubes to choose from.

You should be comparing the EL84 to the 6V6 tube....The 6L6 is not apples and apples actually....The 6L6 has more headroom,handles alot more current and plate voltage and is a warm,round tube tone...
An EL84 breaks up pretty quick and is a smaller tube and not anywhere in the same league with the 6L6..
The EL84 and the 6V6 are alot closer though...The 6V6 being pretty much the smaller Fender combo amp tube and the EL84 being the Vox AC 15,AC 30 etc.tubes...The Fender Pro Juinor however,does use a pair of EL84s and it's a great little "snarling"sounding amp,resembling a little british Marshall more than a Fender sounding amp..
