Electric Violin Amp?

Re: Electric Violin Amp?

Any amplifier for acoustic guitar should do pretty well since the pickups, frequency range and timbre are similar.

Re: Electric Violin Amp?

I have a Fender electric mandolin with a piezo bridge and it sounds great through tube amps like a Blues Jr or a 60's Gibson. The DSL100 was a little too much.

Re: Electric Violin Amp?

I've been reading up on this here and there. Thanks for all of the suggestions!

I'm still somewhat undecided, but i've narrowed it down a bit.

I've heard good things about these...

1. Peavey Delta Blues (i've heard these sound good with harmonicas too ;) )

2. Roland JC

3. SWR Blonde

Keep the suggestions coming...i'd like to stay in the $300 range if possible. My wife thought it would be around $100 hahahahahahh!

Re: Electric Violin Amp?

I bought my wife something for an Anniversary present that she's been wanting for a long time...a Fender Electric Violin.

Now, the question is...what type of amp should i get her for it?

Tube = I'm thinking probably not...might color the sound too much?

Solid State Guitar = Something really clean...like a Roland JC series or something?

Acoustic Guitar amp = Would this be the logical choice?

Keyboard Amp = could kill two birds with one stone here when i buy her a keyboard in the future?

A small PA system = I'm thinking that could get pricey and too much to lug around?

Anybody have any clue about this...?

I would recommend an acoustic amp. It's voiced for acoustic instruments. I have a Shanendoah 80W amp. It has 2 channels one for Microphones and one for instruments. It has a bunch of effects like delays, chorus etc. on the instrument channel. Works great. I use it with my Martin D18 that is equipped with a Fishman piezo.

You can't use a guitar amp, or more specifically a guitar speaker/cabinet. The guitar stuff is designed to heavily shape both frequency response and to respond in a very loose manner, both of which aren't good for the violin.

Tube or not doesn't really color the sound in the same way (as long as there is no overdrive). Of course Tubes still sound warmer but that's not because it kills the highs or something.

For the violin you need something with an even frequency response. Keyboard amp, acoustic guitar amp, PA etc. All the same. Generally you need to decide whether you want to go stereo or not and go from there.

Re: Electric Violin Amp?

Between those 4, I would go with the Marshall or the Genz B.

Now, before you do this, you should also consider the Fishman Loudbox Performer.

With all of the above being said......YOU REALLY NEED TO PLAY THROUGH THESE AMPS TO SEE WHAT YOU LIKE, WHAT SHE LIKES, AND THEN MAKE YOUR DECISION.

Everyone in here has their own favorite amp. Of those above in your list, I own the Acoustasonic 30 DSP. Great Amp but it is not very loud at all. I have auditioned the Fishman Performer at 130 watts, it is a great bedroom and venue amp. It sounds good down low and when you turn it up it sounds great. I have also listened to the Marshall. I liked the Fishman better. I have never auditioned the GB but it gets good reviews.

That's awesome.

I wish they had these things in the 1980ties. Stupid keyboard cubes.
