Electro Harmonix Customer Service

I was wondering if any of you guys have experience with EHX customer service? Recently, on my Metal Muff, the 9volt adapter port isn't working. When its plugged in, it just has a faint sound, and cuts in and out, fizzles and farts. I opened it up, and didn't really notice anything burnt, or loose ect. The pedal only works correctly with a 9volt battery installed, and it eats them fast, so yeah.

I want to send it in and have it fixed. I called their CS and left a message, and am expecting a call in return.

Has anyone here had to deal with them as far as replacement/repair? How did it go?

Re: Electro Harmonix Customer Service

I dealt with EHX Customer Service once...had a Big Muff that I'd bought, and about two weeks after, the stomp switch died...I'd barely used it, maybe a dozen times...so theres no reason it shoulda died. Normally, I would have simply gone back to GC and exchanged it for another BMP. But when I bought that one, I'd gone through all the BMP's they had in stock, and that was the best sounding one...so I didn't really wanna simply exchange it for another I knew to sound worse...So I emailed EHX, and after a week didn't get a response, so I called, got someone after holding for 15-20 minutes...explained the situation to them...they Said I could either send it in for repair, along with a check for $20-30 (something around there can't remember the exact price)...or I could send it in and exchange it for a new BMP under warranty, along with a check to cover shipping...Dude was rather rude too, and when I told him that giving them more money to fix their mistake seemed a bit ridiculous...he told me that I could simply take the pedal back to GC, and exchange it for another, and assured me that their QC was good and "all Modern Big Muffs sound identical"...despite my having gone through a stack of them, and actually heard that they did not sound identical at all, but all quite different...Oh, and the fact that one of their pedals I bought new was dead, in 2 weeks of purchase...great QC, for sure...whatever.

Either way, it was sort of complete ****...They installed a faulty component, and if I wanted them to fix their **** up (far more than a 4PDT stomp costs), I had to give them more money...So yeah, **** that...thats ****ty customer service, as far as I'm concerned...

I've had warranty issues with BBE, and MXR/Way Huge...and Both companies were great...Same exact issue with a BBE pedal (dead 4PDT switch), cept I'd bought the pedal used (which I told them), and they still sent me a new 4PDT switch to install myself...MXR/Way Huge, I got a SPmkII and the pedal simply stopped working after a few days, called them, talked to tech, they explained that this had happened before, an was due to some faulty Caps they received, and offered to either Replace the Pedal free of charge, or simply send me the "switching board" (there's three circuit boards in the SPmkII) so I could install it myself (simply connected with a PC connector thingy)...so I went with the "switching board" and they OVER NIGHTED it to me, free of charge, and then called two days later to make sure it arrived and that the pedal was working fine...then emailed me 6 months after that, to make sure stuff was still going well.......but EHX can't replace a switch unless you send them a check? Totally never buying EHX new again, I like their products, but I'm not giving them my money.

What are you doing dude, jumping up and down on them?

Switches can fail without being abused. The switch on the boost side of my Box of Rock is all wonky - the effect works fine when it's on, but if I turn it off, it nearly kills the signal.

Could be a wire that came loose though. I should check that.

Point is that switches can fail to no fault of the owner.

Re: Electro Harmonix Customer Service

The switches on my Visual Sound pedal are the best I've stomped. Better than MXR, Boss, or EHX, in my opinion. I wish they all worked like those.

Yep, by a nine year old Stephen Dorff.

Nope. haha...If I was, I wouldn't be surprised at all, and wouldn't blame EHX. The BBE was used, and arrived acting like that...the BMP was fine at first and after just a few uses started acting up.

Great. At first I was just going to sell the pedal for cheap, and get a different one, but I thought I would give the company a try and see if they would fix it cheap or free. I'm not throwing them under the bus yet. I should hear from them tomorrow. We'll see.

Re: Electro Harmonix Customer Service

Those aren't the first stories I've heard about EH's customer service. I was extremely hesitant when I bought my memory boy, but ended up buying a year replacement plan from where I bought it from. It's to bad they seem to be shady or just not freaking care about the people that are buying their products.

As for the switches, I've heard a lot of complaints about the post ROHS compliant stuff going bad rather quickly. Well, to be fair, that was a couple years ago when I got into pedal modding and building from kits. I don't know if the quality of them has improved any or not. But they used to be rather troublesome. I would order 4 or 5 at a time and it was rare that I didn't get one that didn't work properly or just wouldn't work at all.

Re: Electro Harmonix Customer Service

I received the phone call from them this morning. They said they can repair it, but I have to ship it to them, along with a money order for $25. They said the $25 is the initial base fee, and if it costs any more than that, they will call me and let me know. I said it better not cost any more than that. It probably only costs $25 at the most, to manufacture the darn thing.

I don't know guys. Seems kinds lame. Any suggestions?

I don't know how much they are new, but you see them all the time for $40/$50. Is that extra few bucks you might save worth having to hassle with shipping it, then waiting for it to come back, and have the possibility of having to pay even more to have it fixed?

Personally I'd just look through GC's site for a cheap one and buy it. A lot less headache unless they send you an empty box lol!

Re: Electro Harmonix Customer Service

Anyone can become an EH dealer; they must sell a stupefying number of pedals. I wouldn't expect much for the margins that are involved.

Yeah, this was exactly the first thing I was going to do. I usually don't send stuff into companies. I thought I would give it a try. I'm still on the fence about it. Its funny though, I told the sales guy on the phone the exact thing you said: "you can get them used all day for $40 or $50" lol

Re: Electro Harmonix Customer Service

I recently bought a deluxe memory man with tap tempo. Rate didn't work. Sent it in with a check for 12 dollars for return shipping. They said that they wouldn't cash the check if I owned the pedal for less than 90 days. I had just bought it. They cashed the check and sent my working pedal back with no knobs. I was able to contact someone and they sent me some knobs, a shirt and some strings for the troubles.

Re: Electro Harmonix Customer Service

In my experience, the people at EHx have been able to help me. I've called dozens of times with all sorts of questions, and sent a big muff pi and memory toy for repairs. I only paid $5 for each pedal for shipping to them.

Re: Electro Harmonix Customer Service

usually when i have had problems with switches going out i just took my pedals to a local shop and had them replace it. never costed me more than $10. plus i could take it home with me that day and not have to wait for ti to be gone for a few weeks.
