embarking on another build.

Re: embarking on another build.

Cool, another build! I always think it's a shame to paint over a nice ash wood grain. I'd pick a beautiful stain like aqua blue or crimson red. Then have a 1 ply gloss black guard routed for an SM-1n mini hum.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: embarking on another build.

if i can find the color its going to be a seafoam green with a white pearl pickguard. lil 59 in the bridge and a seymourized mini humbucker in the neck with a push pull for coil split. If i cant find the seafoam green I may dye it. all the grain is well covered now tho because i sealed it with shellac. guess i could always sand that back a bit til i feel the grain and then fill it. If i went that route id dye the grain filler with the cordovan transtint i have here then maybe dye it amber with an orange burst. I seen it once and they called it an autumn burst. Loved it.

on my jataleguar project, I had to strip it down to the wood and start over. i was wrong in my assumption that bubinga is hard enough not to need filler.

trying to decide what filler/sealer to use now.

i DID, however, have excellent results with the dye. i used the powdered dye from woodcraft. i wanted bluegreen, so i simply mixed a little bit of green into the blue.

for your project, since you want seafoamish green, just add a dab of blue into the green dye and do it that way.... this way you don't waste the good wood grain by painting it.

granted, the wood is completely different.

Wow, Rumble, that looks fantastic. Nice staining job. That grain just pops out. Beautiful color as well.

Re: embarking on another build.

very beautiful color. my grain isnt anywhere near that nice

you can still do the 2 tone effect though by laying black first, sanding, then applying the secondary color.

it looks like your wider grains would retain the dominant color and the narrow grains would take the lighter color.
