*emfehwibble* WANT WANT WANT: Craigslist '68 Tele

Re: *emfehwibble* WANT WANT WANT: Craigslist '68 Tele

I would want to see pics of the QA stamps on the neck heel and in the pocket.

High prices revolve around originality. The advertised guitar is clearly extensively modified. IMO, the price is too steep.

Price is far too high for that condition. The guitar's a bit beat up, and has been modified much more than the seller is admitting. In addition to the tuners and neck pickup, the pickup switch and bridge are not original. I have a bridge EXACTLY like that on my Tele and I like it quite a lot, but it isn't original Fender equipment. It also looks like the E and A string ferrules on the back are missing.

Paint also doesn't look beat up enough for me... I wonder if it's a '68 neck on a newer body?

Sent from my iPad using a bunch of electrons, copper, and probably some fiber optic cable

That's possible, but my guess would be on a heavily-modded '68. It could be a great player, but it isn't worth $4500.

People used to say that the good thing about CBS era gear was that nobody bothered faking it. Nowadays, who knows.

Either way, that's a BADASS looking Tele that I would totally rock out. You just have to make sure the neck and body check out. Also, the dates on the pots and all the other details that give you some insight into what the guitar is. If everything checks out, then you'd just have to take into account how modded it is and price accordingly.

I've never seen a humbucker cutout like that on a pickguard, it's usually either rectangular or rectangular with rounded edges, but never a "gapless" route. I think it looks great.

In addition to all the other non-original items cited, I'm not convinced that's original paint. The hazing and buckle rash look strange. I think someone was trying to hide something midway through it's life. Looks like about a $1000 - $1600 guitar to me.

Re: *emfehwibble* WANT WANT WANT: Craigslist '68 Tele

The neck looks legit. The look of the lacquer finish is correct for that year, and you can see the holes from the original tuners (which mounted using 12 screws). It also looks like the wider tuner spacing is correct (the F tuners were wider spaced than Klusons), though you can't really tell from the pix. Also, the font on the "TELECASTER" part of the decal is correct. Nobody that I've ever found in my extensive searching for a '68-style decal makes one that has the truly correct font on that part of the decal. So this neck is either real, or a fake that has a home-done decal that was very well researched and made. The body looks legit too (protruding string ferrules are a distinct feature that began in '68), though the finish has not worn out like poly finishes usually do. The back, maybe, but I would say definitely not the forearm wear on the front. I would guess either: 1) it has been stripped and refinished, 2) it is a '68 that happened to have been done in lacquer (it would not have been unheard of for a basic color like black or white to have occasionally been sprayed in lacquer in the late '60's through the early '80's, and '68 was a transition year from lacquer to poly), 3) the forearm wear was, for some dumb reason, done with sandpaper at some point. That's unlikely, but it is a possibility. Poly just doesn't wear like that.

Also, notice that the bridge is not original, and the pickguard might be an earlier-model thick one-ply type (or you just can't really see the black ply in the photo, if it is there).

It's a badass guitar that I would be proud to sport. I absolutely love black/white Teles with maple necks...and I love the maple-cap necks, as they look nice and clean with no skunk stripe or truss rod plug. But I don't think I'd pay $4,500 for it.

If that's what floats your boat. Does have a certain mojo…

$1500 or $4500, I don't have the bank for that. If anyone's interested, go for it. No worries about Orpheoing me...
